Death Metal Rewrites the Ending of DC’s Biggest Event

Spoilers for Dark Nights: Death Metal #7 ahead!

The ending of DC’s recent Dark Nights: Death Metal sees Wonder Woman leave our plane of reality for bigger and better things. It is a touching and poignant ending to what has been an otherwise bleak event. Long-time DC fans may recognize Death Metal’s ending as a sly “rewrite” of the ending of DC’s original crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths. That ending saw the original Superman go to a similar fate. Dark Nights: Death Metal #7, written by Scott Snyder with art by Greg Capullo and a roster of superstar artists including Bryan Hitch, is in stores now.

Much like Death Metal, Crisis on Infinite Earths served as a “shake-up” for the DC Universe. Crisis’s tagline was “Worlds will live, worlds will die and the DC Universe will never be the same.” That was not hyperbole—the entirety of DC’s Multiverse, save for a handful of Earths, was destroyed, and the surviving Earths merged into one. The Multiverse eventually returned, but is destroyed again in Death Metal, only to be revived in a new form. And while the Multiverse survives the event, it is changed. The rebirth of the Multiverse is largely thanks to Wonder Woman, who super charges herself with cosmic powers and fights the Batman Who Laughs. She also convinces the celestial beings known as The Hands to restore the Multiverse, rather than destroy it.

The Hands appear to her as an alternate version of herself and tell Wonder Woman they are impressed with the residents of her Multiverse. They have never seen anything quite like this one and decide to restore it, but with changes. The Hands then inform her that she must ascend to another plane, in order to help them prepare for a major threat. The two then disappear into nothingness.

The original Superman, Kal-L of Earth-2, had something similar to that happen to him at the end of Crisis. After his existence had been erased from history, and he feared his Lois Lane had met a similar fate, Alexander Luthor revealed he had saved Lois before the destruction of the Multiverse. The two of them, along with Luthor and Superboy-Prime, went to a pocket dimension to live out the rest of their lives. The big difference is that the Earth-2 Superman and company went to paradise as a reward for their heroism, but Wonder Woman is ascending to help protect the Multiverse she was instrumental in helping save in the first place.

There is no mention of Diana in any of DC’s upcoming Infinite Frontier solicits that follow the conclusion of Death Metal; indeed, it looks like her mother Hippolyta will be taking her place, at least on the Justice League. Wonder Woman has come to the end of her road (for now) and she got a truly grand send-off, one that harkens back to a major event in DC history.
