Death Note 5 Times Ryuk Was The Best Friend Light Could Have (& 5 Why He Was The Worst)

Death Note is one of the most legendary anime of all time. This shonen manga turned animated masterpiece is one of the main models of many psychological thrillers to follow it in the world of anime. Two of the reasons it’s so damn popular and memorable are its two main characters, Light Yagami and his Shinigami sidekick Ryuk.

While Ryuk was literally tied to Light that didn’t change the fact that he was at times a true friend to the lonely (by choice) Light. This list will be chalking up the times he was the best friend Light could have and other times when he was the worst.

10 BEST: OFFERING TO PLAY GAMES WITH HIM

During one scene in the series when Light comes home after school Ryuk is, of course, waiting right at the door for him. After a long day, Ryuk points out that no one is home so he wants to know if Light would like to play some games or do anything fun with him. Of course, Light ignores him because he’s got some business to take care of but still a good thing on Ryuk’s part.

In fact, it’s during this scene that it is revealed that the duo has actually played videogames among other fun friendly activities. Goes to show you that Light was capable of being a friend to the Shinigami at times.

9 WORST: JUST USING LIGHT FOR ENTERTAINMENT

One thing that is learned not in one scene but throughout the entire Death Note series is that Ryuk isn’t following Light around because of friendship or anything of the sort. In fact, Ryuk constantly lets Light, and through that, the viewers, know that he’s simply chilling with Mr. Yagami for his own entertainment.

It’s really boring in the land of the Shinigami so Ryuk decided to drop his book down into the human world. Lucky for him he ended up dropping it into the hands of the most entertaining guy on the planet apparently.

8 BEST: HIS CONSTANT PRAISE

While Light may just be hanging around Light for entertainment and enjoyment he does see actual brains in his acts of godliness and insanity. Ryuk constantly praises Light throughout the series letting him know how truly intelligent he is through all of his actions related to his Kira persona, the Death Note book, and of course Interpol.

While Light is constantly praised for his intelligence from others as well he simply views that side as school knowledge. Ryuk is getting to see the full extent of his knowledge so it’s much more of a big deal.

7 WORST: NOT TRULY CARING ABOUT LIGHT

As stated earlier, Ryuk is only following Light around for entertainment value. His little trip to Earth is basically a getaway from the boredom of the Shinigami world and a way to get a vacation from his Death God job for a while. This leads to the truth of the matter. Ryuk really doesn’t care about Light.

Sure, once Light dies then Ryuk has to go back to a world he mostly detests but he won’t be sad his “buddy” is dead, he’ll just be sad over the fact that he’s going to go back to the most boring place in the universe.

6 BEST: HELPING HIM OUT WITH HIS CAMERA PROBLEM

Ryuk is the only person that will actively help out Light throughout the series without needing to be fooled into doing so. Even though he’s mostly doing it to get a little something out of it it’s still a buddy-ish thing to do, right? This was seen big-time when Light needed the invisible Ryuk to go around his room and let him know where each and every hidden camera was placed.

Ryuk performed this little quest without even being needed to be told twice despite it being one of the dullest and tiresome things to be tasked with. This little trip to Earth is supposed to be his vacation after all.

5 WORST: THEM ONLY BEING CONNECTED SYMBIOTICALLY

Another sad truth about Light and Ryuk’s relationship is that it is as symbiotic as things can get. The two don’t really care about each other as true friends should. If Ryuk was to mysteriously disappear sure it might serve as a slight inconvenience to the new God on Earth, but he’d definitely find a way to move on without him.

The same goes for Ryuk. He came to Earth looking for a good time and that’s exactly what Light is to him. When the time comes for Light to die he won’t be sad but he’ll just be missing that time on Earth.

4 BEST: EVERY TIME HE LISTENED TO LIGHT

Ryuk seems to always have an ear open for his new friend and it’s not just because the guy entertains him. Ryuk generally is interested in what Light has to say because the guy is so darn different. He serves as someone for Light to constantly vent to and voice all his beliefs to when no one else is around that will truly get him.

Light views everyone as lower than him but when it comes to Ryuk he sees him somewhat like an equal. This isn’t on the knowledge scale but more on the Godliness scale.

3 WORST: ONLY BEING FRIENDS FOR THE APPLES

One of the best examples of Ryuk being a bad friend is the fact that he only looks at Light as a TV show and as a drug supplier. What drug is he supplying to his Death God buddy? Why apples of course.

One of the sole reasons Ryuk came to Earth is for this delicious treat he would die for if he was able to die. Light just so happens to be a human that can easily obtain and supply these fruits that Ryuk loves so much.

2 BEST: THE TIMES HE ACTUALLY TOLD LIGHT HE LIKED HIM

While Ryuk did use Light quite a bit, almost more than Light used him in fact. He did tell Light a few times that he generally liked him. It’s not sure whether he was saying this in comparison to the usual humans he’s met but he still said he liked the guy.

It’s seen that most on Earth aren’t huge fans of Light due to thinking he has a superiority complex due to his IQ. Guess they were right, especially after he got his hands on that book.

1 WORST: HE KILLS LIGHT

Exactly what kind of real friend would be fine with killing their friend. This is probably the biggest instance of Ryuk being the worst pal that anyone could ask for. He kills Light with no remorse. Yes, it’s only part of the job but there are other Shinigami that actually show genuine love for their human partners.

The thing is that Ryuk isn’t one of those other Shinigami.
