Death Note’s Alternate Ending Revealed in Mysterious Unverified Manga

Warning! Spoilers for Death Note ahead!

An unverified alternate ending to the Death Note psychological thriller has been causing quite a bit of commotion in the manga and anime communities ever since it just mysteriously appeared online. Creator Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata have neither confirmed nor refuted the validity of the manga, which has only fueled speculation and interest. Understandably, the loudest and most fervent voices contributing to this uproar comes from the diehard fans who are still reeling over the fact that Light Yagami lost, thus preventing his dastardly attempts of becoming the ultimate hand of justice from ever coming to light. But upon reading the manga, it’s clear that this “loss” is a blessing in disguise.

The official (and verified) story follows a high school student named Light Yagami who suffers from delusions of grandeur on an epic scale. This boy soon acquires a profoundly misplaced sense of justice once he comes in possession of a dangerous notebook that falls in his lap. The owner, he discovers, can kill whosever name he writes within its pages so long as he knows what the victim looks like as well as their real name. The writer can also control the manner by which that victim can die by writing the details within its pages. Refraining to divulge this information just results in the victim suffering from a fatal heart attack.

The manga and anime both conclude in the culmination of Light’s eventual defeat and death. But the alternate ending provides a glimpse into the horrific future that Light would have experienced had he actually “won.” While it is assumed that Light would have endured this hell regardless of how the anime and manga officially ended, him living for as long as he does with so much more time at his disposal to enact his justice means that the number of names that he could have written in his book could have skyrocketed exponentially.

This is important because the answer exacerbates the severity of his suffering. Upon his eventual death, Light is transported to a place where one of the gods reads from every Death Note user’s book, an ostensibly innocuous act that causes the user to experience each death written within its pages. For Light, that’s decades upon decades worth of names and, in turn, deaths he must endure. This is compounded by the fact that Light looks quite old when he dies and has just finished writing down a flurry of names before his death, which implies that he spent every day of his life in this manner.

Upon the realization of his accursed fate, Light understandably seems to succumb to madness. But then the badassery that fans have come to expect of Light shines through. He somehow summons the will and might to find and confront the god who has damned him to this immense suffering. In short, this alternate ending not only provides a glimpse into the Death Note world for voracious fans, but teases how a new series could look and even transcend the already epic stature of the original Death Note series.
