Deathstroke Just Revealed His Favorite Robin

As the most iconic enemy of the Teen Titans, Deathstroke is the closest thing any Robin has ever had to a nemesis. Though he is most associated with Dick Grayson, every Robin has clashed with the DC Universe’s most deadly assassin at least once, and these clashes rarely end well for Deathstroke. His constant losses have given him a legendary hatred for Batman’s sidekick. But readers would be surprised to learn that there’s one Robin he does respect. In Teen Titans Annual #2, Deathstroke reveals that his favorite Robin is none other than Damian Wayne.

Deathstroke actually has more reason to hate Damian than most other Robins. Throughout his time as leader of the Teen Titans, Damian has been attempting to solve the problem of supervillains never learning their lesson. To solve this Damian created a prison under the Titan’s HQ, Mercy Hall. The conditions in the prison were horrible as Damian left many villains shackled to walls without food or water. After Deathstroke was captured, he started a prison riot which led to the detained villains escaping and Deathstroke being killed by the Titan Red Arrow. A group of former prisoners named the Fearsome Five decide that Damian has crossed a line by killing the villain Brother Blood. Fearing the Titans though, they opt to hire an assassin to take out the teenage heroes, a newly resurrected Deathstroke.

As the Titans threaten to bring Damian to justice for his actions, Deathstroke strikes. He tells the Titans that though he was hired, he hates the team so much that he would have done it for free. After a rocket launcher blast, Deathstroke leaps into action, immediately striking at Damian. As the two fight, something surprising happens, Deathstroke actually compliments Damian. The wizened assassin tells Damian that no other Robin has had the courage to actually follow through with their mission. Dick and Tim are both about as by the book as heroes get and even Jason is much more of a mercenary than an actual crime fighter. To Deathstroke, Damian’s willingness to kill and torture villains is admirable.

Deathstroke initially has the upper hand against Damian, but the tides turn when the Titans fight to capture both of them. Damian uses the distraction to slash Deathstroke in the back. Then, just as Damian prepares to land a killing blow on Deathstroke, Red Arrow blocks Damian’s sword with her bow. As someone who has killed Deathstroke before, Red Arrow assures Damian that killing will wreck him more than he thinks. Deathstroke uses the ensuing chaos to flee the scene.

Though dramatic, this reveal is not surprising. Deathstroke has always believed in survival of the fittest and that Dick’s strict adherence to a moral code was more a sign of weakness than strength. The fact that Slade sees so much of himself in Damian might be hinting at a future storyline for the former Robin. In the Teen Titans animated series, Slade’s goal was always to find an apprentice, and though that usually hasn’t motivated his comic counterpart, it’s difficult to imagine a better apprentice than Damian. Many have noted that Deathstroke is a dark mirror to Batman, giving Damian good reason to see him as a replacement mentor. After quitting as Robin, leaving the Titans, and leaving Batman’s shadow, it’s easy to see how a vulnerable Damian could be lured into working with Deathstroke. Teen Titans Annual #2 shows that Damian Wayne might be going down a much darker path than fans think.
