Deathstroke Reveals the One Weakness Batman Will Never Overcome

Warning! Spoilers for Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #6!

Deathstroke is a Batman villain who always seems to find ways to give The Dark Knight a run for his money, and now he’s just revealed the one weakness Bats will never be able to overcome: helping others! Worrying about everyone’s safety over his own is usually a good thing in his line of work, but when attempting to finally escape a twisted game of Fortnite, it clearly hurts more than helps.

Touched on in the opening pages of Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #6 by Christos Gage and Reilly Brown, Batman is beating himself up over events from the previous issue that left him and Catwoman effectively trapped on Fortnite Island. After first helping the other Fortnite players return to their home dimensions by utilizing the Zero Point, Batman uses Catwoman’s, Deathstroke’s and his own “dimensional energy” to open a gateway back to Gotham City proper. But as Deathstroke is usually wont to do in these types of situations, the traitorous mercenary immediately pulls a fast one on the pair, and jumps into the open portal before either has a chance to follow.

Stuck until they figure out another way home, Catwoman can’t help but react to Batman after he admits that Deathstroke, “…played us like amateurs, and I let it happen!” Saying that, “You were worrying about others, as always,” Catwoman hits the nail on the head as to why Batman is the hero he is, but also shows why it’s a weakness that Deathstroke – and other villains – can easily exploit.

Waiting until the right moment after Batman had helped his fellow Fortnite players home, Deathstroke jumps at the chance to use Batman’s tactical weakness of worrying about others against him so that he can effectively kill two birds with one stone: get back to Gotham proper and trap his nemesis in a place that he hopefully can’t come back from. And as Deathstroke does exactly that, Batman can’t believe he let a villain get the best of him, even though it probably wouldn’t have gone any other way given Batman’s heroic work ethic.

Since virtually day one, Batman’s instincts as a hero have always been to lead and take risks for others, regardless of what it might mean for himself and his well-being. But as seen here and in many other instances in the past, Deathstroke – along with the rest of Batman’s eclectic group of rogues – have been able to turn Bats’ defining trait of helping others before himself on its head, making it so that he suffers more for his values as a protector and hero than anyone else.

And although Batman and Catwoman eventually find a way to escape Fortnite for good, Deathstroke turning Batman’s own weakness against him is something that will no doubt happen again given the fact that helping others is who Batman is at the very core of his being. So if that’s the case, maybe next time Batman should keep a better eye on the villain he’s working with, just to be safe.
