Deleting Your Facebook Account Deletes Every Oculus Game You Own Forever

Users have discovered that all Oculus purchases are tied directly to a Facebook account, meaning that games are lost if the profile is deleted.

New information has revealed that user’s who delete their Facebook accounts will permanently lose access to all of their Oculus data and games. The Oculus Rift remains one of the most popular virtual reality headsets but has drawn widespread criticism in recent months. This is largely a result of the company requiring users to sign into a Facebook account to be able to use any of the VR devices made by Oculus, a move that was met with anger by most owners.

This is not the first time that recent (and maligned) Facebook integration with Oculus has caused problems. Earlier this year it emerged that some users were being locked out of being able to use the Oculus Quest 2 due to issues with their personal Facebook accounts. According to multiple players, the social media site had banned a number of new accounts that had been created specifically to log in to Oculus products. Facebook’s Andrew Bosworth later warned customers to ensure that their accounts were “in good standing” before purchasing an Oculus Rift headset.

Users can lose access to all of their Oculus data, including access to purchased games, if they delete their Facebook profile. Twitter user CixLiv noticed a notice in the terms and conditions of the Oculus VR headset, which states that profile data is tied directly to the user’s Facebook account. That means that deactivating the social media account will stop players from being able to access any of the games they have bought for Oculus. However, deleting a Facebook account also permanently removes access to all store credit, games, and achievements. There does not seem to be any way to get this content once it has been deleted.

The Oculus Quest 2 is the company’s second VR headset. It features better specs and more features than its predecessors, even allowing players to play virtual reality games without being connected directly to a console. Pre-orders for the device first became available in September and the device costs $100 less than the first headset. The $299 package includes access to two controllers and a glasses spacer for those who need to wear their spectacles while playing.

The integration between Oculus and Facebook was already something of a sore point for users. But the fact that all content and purchases are tied directly to social media profiles will no doubt cause even more anger, especially with this being a new development. Players will likely see this as an attempt by Facebook to get access to even more data from users that might otherwise not make an account with the site.
