When a Demon Slayer character perishes, it’s a major event, and fans might even weep for the villains, let alone the sympathetic heroes, and that’s what makes Demon Slayer so memorable. Some deaths lack this impact, such as Yahaba’s and Susamaru’s, but other deaths hit fans “right in the feels,” and they can be roughly ranked according to how tragic and impactful these deaths were, including off-screen deaths.

8 Enmu Panicked As He Died

Enmu wasn’t the most sympathetic demon out there, since he genuinely loved to torture and frighten humans with his dream-based techniques, and he even sent human children to do his dirty work for him. Still, he was ultimately a victim, and he was desperate to please his cruel boss, Muzan, and save his own life.

Muzan fell to Tanjiro and Inosuke, and as he crumbled away, he panicked, dearly wishing to start his life over. He also relived his childhood traumas related to nightmares and reality, and that was a sad sight to see. But there’s no doubt that he needed to be killed as he was still a monster.

7 The Hand Demon Missed His Brother

One of the first demons that Tanjiro ever fought was known as the “hand demon,” a massive creature with sickly green skin, intense yellow eyes, and multiple arms, one of which always hugged its neck to protect the demon from decapitation. This demon was like a boss battle during the demon slayer exam.

Despite its grotesque appearance and brutality, the hand demon had a vulnerable side, and Tanjiro saw it once he slew this creature. The hand demon, as a human, had always wanted to hold onto his brother’s hand, and he actually shed tears of gratitude when Tanjiro held its hand as it died.

6 Daki & Gyutaro Shared A Tragic Death Facing One Another

During the Entertainment District story arc, Tanjiro and his allies learned that the Upper Moon Six is not a single demon, but rather, a brother/sister duo, Daki and Gyutaro. Both of them were cruel and arrogant creatures who had to pay for their many crimes, but like many demons, they are also victims deep down.

Daki and Gyutaro struggled in their childhood, with Gyutaro being ostracized for his appearance and Daki nearly dying from burn wounds. Muzan and his allies recruited them to the Moons to give them a new lease on life, and the two of them panicked as their severed heads crumbled to ash. They never had an easy life.

5 Rui Just Wanted A Happy Family

Rui was once the Lower Moon Five, and even if he ranked low among the Moons, he was still a formidable and cruel opponent for Tanjiro and his allies. Rui ruled the forest with his spider “family,” whose members he recruited to be his mother, father, sisters, and more.

Rui treated this new family harshly, but as he died at the hands of the Hashira, flashbacks made it clear that in his human life, he was simply a victim. He had a frail body and wanted a family to take care of him, and this new spider family was compensation for losing his original parents.

4 The Mother Demon Feared Death

Rui recruited a variety of humans to become members of his spider “family,” and he chose a petite human woman to be his new mother. This unnamed character looked older and more mature as a spider demon, but despite her rank as Rui’s “mother,” she feared him.

It’s true that the spider mother killed humans and regretted none of it. Still, she was treated poorly by her son, and deep down, she wasn’t always such a bad person. She intensely feared death, but Tanjiro, bound by duty, sliced her head off. She soon perished, and fans were sad to see her go. By demon standards, she wasn’t so bad.

3 Kyogai Was An Aspiring Author

Kyogai once had the rank of Lower Moon Six, but he later lost it when stronger demons came along and knocked him out of the Moons. Meanwhile, as a former human, Kyogai also wanted to become a great author, but his editor didn’t like his material and sorned Kyogai as a hack and failure.

Kyogai was terribly upset, and he just wanted someone to appreciate his manuscript. Tanjiro learned of this, and out of respect, Tanjiro refused to step on any of the manuscript’s pages, even during mortal combat. Tanjiro even validated Kyogai as an author just before the latter’s death.

2 Kyojuro Rengoku’s Death Was Truly Tragic

By far one of Demon Slayer’s most heartbreaking and memorable deaths, the demise of the flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku was an oddly optimistic and hopeful affair as well. Even though Kyojuro had failed to kill the ferocious demon Akaza in battle, Kyojuro had set an excellent example as a demon slayer and warrior.

Tanjiro and his friends took Kyojuro’s hopeful dying words to heart, and Kyojuro managed to die in the morning sun with a smile on his face, despite his circumstances. Tanjiro and Demon Slayer fans everywhere will never forget this scene.

1 The Kamado Family Was Slaughtered By Muzan’s Hand

This horrific slaughter is what launched Tanjiro’s character arc as a trainee demon slayer, though if it were up to Tanjiro, none of this would have ever happened. One fateful night, while Tanjiro was out on business, the demon lord Muzan Kibutsuji arrived at the Kamado household and went wild.

Based on what Tanjiro saw when he returned, everyone except Nezuko was butchered where they stood, and none of the Kamados had a chance to flee. Only Nezuko Kamado survived as a demon, and that’s what inspired Tanjiro to begin his quest. All those innocent lives were lost for no good reason.
