Upon its theatrical release in Japan on October 16, 2020, the big-screen sequel to the popular manga and TV series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, accrued multiple historical achievements. In addition to being the highest-grossing global release of the year, earning more than $469 million worldwide, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train also became the highest-grossing R-rated animated feature film of all time, the highest-grossing anime film of all time, and the most lucrative Japanese movie ever produced.

Given the massive commercial success, Aniplex and Ufotable have announced plans to renew the TV anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba for a second season to premiere sometime in 2021. In the meantime, here are the best demon anime to check out.

10 Overlord (2015 – )

Based on the “Light” novel series written by Kugane Maruyama, Overlord is a splendid demonic anime series that follows Momonga (Satoshi Hino), a young loner who becomes inadvertently trapped in a video game full of yokai, albedos, and a frightening mythological Cocytus.

Once trapped inside the game, Momonga is anointed as a warrior king and must conquer the new world by defeating the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his raft of evil minions. With 39 episodes produced since 2015, plans for a season 4 return have yet to be announced.

9 Blue Exorcist (2011 – 2012)

While it only lasted 25 episodes from 2011-2012, Blue Exorcist is a must-watch for fans of Demon Slayer. The series centers on Rin Okumura (Nobuhiko Okamoto), a young man who learns that he is the direct descendant of Satan, despite being raised by the famed exorcist, Father Fujimoto (Kirk Thornton).

When he learns that his father is the devil incarnate, Rin joins the clandestine True Cross Academy to become a trained exorcist and defeat the forces of evil that course through his blood.

8 High School DxD (2012 – 2018)

One of the most compelling dynamics of the beloved anime series High School DxD is how the unlikeable protagonist, Issei Hyodo (Yuki Kaji), is turned into a demon as a way to better himself.

Issei is a libidinous and unintelligent high school sophomore who is murdered by a girl he wrongs on their first date. When he is resurrected as a demon, Issei is sent to work for Rias Gremory (Yoko Hikasa), an almighty demon who happens to resemble the most beautiful girl in school. In addition to the freaky demonic iconography, the show serves as a worthy morality play.

7 Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan (2010 – 2011)

Based on the manga series of the same name written by Hiroshi Shiibashi, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan is the perfect companion animated piece to Demon Slayer. Both series follow a protagonist torn between their human existence and their demonic ancestry.

The show tracks Rikuo Nura (Darrel Guilbeau), a tormented teenager who tries to hide the fact that he is a three-quarters human and one-quarter demon. While resisting his demonic urges by day, Rikuo leads the demons by night while trying to maintain the semblance of a normal life.

6 The Devil Is A Part-Timer! (2013 – )

Despite being off the air for the past eight years, producers of the adored 2013 anime The Devil is a Part-Timer! recently announced plans to produce a season 2. According to IMDb, the show will return on February 5, 2022.

The Devil is a Part-Timer! subverts the demonic anime formula by placing Satan on Earth, stripping him of his evil powers, and forcing him to work as fast food employee in modern-day Japan. With more of a comedic bent than the others, the show is an ideal change of pace for Demon Slayer fans who still crave yokai horror.

5 Black Butler (2008 – 2010)

Adapted from the Yana Toboso manga series of the same name, Black Butler is sure to appeal to fans of Demon Slayer. The story follows Ciel Phantomhive, a 13-year-old boy who sells his soul to a demonic entity as a means of avenging his parents’ murder.

In exchange for his soul, Ciel is protected by his demonic bodyguard who is disguised as a household butler dressed in black attire. When Ciel isn’t fighting for his life, he must keep his family’s toy company afloat.

4 Claymore (2007)

Although it lasted just one season, the 26-episode run of Claymore remains one of the most riveting and unique demonic anime series ever produced. Set in medieval times, the show fuses elements of the past and future in some of the most exciting ways imaginable.

Based on the Norihiro Yagi manga series, Claymore follows Clare (Houko Kuwashima), a young soldier who is tasked with training half-human, half-Yoma hybrid warriors how to defeat the scourge of demonic shapeshifting humanoid Yoma creatures ravaging their medieval island.

3 Inuyasha (2000 – 2004)

Featuring some of the all-time scariest underworld monsters ever conceived for an animated series, Inuyasha remains one of the three most definitive demon anime in history. Fans of Demon Slayer would do wise to catch up if they haven’t already.

Adapted from the Rumiko Takahashi manga series, Inuyasha traces the heroic exploits of Kagome Higurashi (Satsuki Yukino), a 15-year-old girl who is transported to Feudal Japan where she must save a half-demon named Inuyasha (Kappei Yamaguchi) while slaying a frightening variety of demonic entities.

2 Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (1992 – 1995)

The oldest anime on the list remains one of the most recommendable for genuine Demon Slayer fanatics. In the first of several spinoffs, Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files lasted three seasons and 112 episodes from 1992-1995.

The story focuses on Yusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old boy who is fatally struck by a car after rescuing a baby from oncoming traffic. When he is reincarnated and given a second chance at life, he is designated as an “Underworld Detective” and assigned to solve a series of supernatural crimes involving ghosts, demons, monsters, and other hellish creatures.

1 Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba (2019 – )

Since Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is an official big-screen sequel of the beloved anime series, it stands to reason that Demon Slayer: Kimtesu No Yaiba is the number one destination for fans to visit.

When their family is assaulted by a vicious horde of demonic monsters, Tanjiro (Natsuki Hanae) realizes his little sister Nezuko (Akari Kito) is slowly turning into a demon as well. In order to reverse the curse and save his sister for good, Tanjiro opts to become a demon so that he can fight fire with fire, so to speak.
