The Hashira are humanities best defense against demons. This is how they stack-up.

The Hashira, a.k.a the Demon Slayer Corp Pillars, receive a whole lot of respect and admiration from the people in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba storyline, and with good reason: not many humans have a chance against the demons’ strength, cruelty, or murderous tendencies. Muzan Kibutsuji and his Twelve Demon Moons work to remain a constant threat to humanity, but Kagaya Ubuyashiki and the Pillars stand as the first line of defense. Check out this list of the top 10 Pillars in DSKNY.
9 The Insect Pillar: Shinobu Kocho
Shinobu Kocho has been instrumental to the Demon Slayer Corp operation, and her contribution goes beyond the battle field. Her Insect Breathing techniques and customized Nichirin Blade complement her speedy fighting style but it’s Shinobu’s chemistry knowledge that makes her both a major threat to demons, and a helper of humankind.
Shinobu’s ultimate goal wasn’t to just eradicate all demons, but instead wished for peace across species.
8 The Sound Pillar: Tengen Uzui
Tengen Uzui was born into one of the last surviving Shinobi families. The skills gained from his upbringing made Tengen an effective fighter all-around, even while poisoned and missing a hand.
Everything about the guy is expressive of his favorite word: flamboyance, from the nunchuck-style wielding of his Nichirin Blades, to his jewel-laced clothing. Tengen’s Sound Breathing allows him to mentally record his battles like a musical score and act on the insight.
7 The Flame Pillar: Kyojuro Rengoku
Being in a family line of Flame Breathing swordsmen, Kyojuro Rengoku had a deep sense of pride about his job. A great motivation for his passion is the promise Kyojuro made to his mother to use his exceptional strength protect others.
Not only was he a top swordsman, but Kyojuro had one of the strongest personalities in Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s group of Pillars and was an inspiration to the other Demon Slayers, including those of the higher ranks.
6 The Former Water Pillar: Sakonji Urokodaki
The name of the “Cultivator of Swordsmen” Sakonji Urokodaki carries weight within the Demon Slayer community; achieving the Hashira position and surviving to old age is a recognizable feat for anyone in the Corp.
Sakonji is rumored to wear his tengu mask because of the demons teasing him about his kind face. He also possess a keen sense of smell — both traits he shares with Tanjiro Kamado.
5 The Snake Pillar: Obanai Iguro
Directionally nuanced attacks may be the method for Obanai’s Snake Breathing techniques, but his attitude is strict and straightforward, even if it means someone has to suffer — save Kagaya Ubuyashiki of course.
Obanai is also extremely cutting with his words towards others, but he makes it clear when someone has his favor. He doesn’t hide his infatuation with Mitsuri the Love Pillar, but somehow, mysteriously, she seems totally oblivious.
4 The Mist Pillar: Muichiro Tokito
In the same way he was of the first Pillars of his generation to activate the Flame Mark, Muichiro inherited swordsmanship as a descendant of the first Breath users, and is a master of Mist Breathing at just 14 years of age (he joined the Demon Slayer Corp at around 10 years old).
Muichiro credits Tanjiro for the recovery of his memory, stating that his father also had red eyes that expressed great kindness.
3 The Wind Pillar: Sanemi Shinazugawa
Because of his marechi, or rare blood type, Sanemi Shinazugawa has had plenty of experience fighting demons since before ever joining the Corp.
His ruthless resolve as a Demon Slayer is easy to understand when taking into account that his blood is like gluten-free liquor to demons, and the fact that in his youth, Sanemi was forced to kill his demon-infected mother, who had just finished devouring his younger siblings.
2 The Water Pillar: Giyu Tomioka
Giyu Tomioka is a masterful swordsman, but he didn’t always give himself that credit. The patterned half of the haori he wears is in honor of Sabito, a young swordsman who died saving all of the other students in his Final Selection Exam.
With some motivation from his peers, Giyu accepted his position as a Pillar, activated his Flame Mark. Giyu is also the one who made the request for Sakonji Urokodaki to train Tanjiro, and for Nezuko’s inner strength to be trusted.
1 The Stone Pillar: Gyomei Himejima
Gyomei Himejima stands as the tallest and indisputably the strongest of the Demon Slayer Pillars under Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s leadership. Despite being blind, Gyomei fights using a spiked ball and hand-axe on a chain — all made of the same materials as Nichirin Blades — with very keen accuracy.
Gyomei’s Stone Techniques differ from the Breath users’; chanting and meditation are his ways of increasing and focusing his strength to levels that rival the demons.
