The difference between Demon’s Souls on PlayStation 5 and the original on PlayStation 3 is like night and day, as a new comparison video shows. The upcoming remake got a gameplay trailer during the PS5 showcase event this past week, along with the announcement that it will be a launch title exclusive for the next-gen console. That’s despite its reveal trailer accidentally saying that Demon’s Souls would also be released for PC, which Sony later denied.

The most obvious changes in the new trailer focus on making the game’s world more vibrant. Besides the graphical updates coming to Demon’s Souls, which are to be expected with remasters for the newest generation of consoles, the trailer also shows much faster loading times when warping between areas, and the reintroduction of vaulting, which existed in the original Demon’s Souls but did not appear in later FromSoftware titles.

YouTuber Phobia released a comparison video showcasing the recent trailer side-by-side with gameplay footage captured from the original game. Phobia recorded gameplay footage on a PC, upscaling the original PS3 version to 4k60, with the goal of focusing on asset comparisons rather than resolution comparisons. The trailer uses the debug character from the original Demon’s Souls, which Phobia also uses for a more accurate comparison. As the comparison video shows, the Demon’s Souls remaster coming to PS5 is much more than a simple upscale. Even when compared to the original game running at a similar resolution, the remake has an impressive visual style all its own.

The changes made by Bluepoint Games seem to be focused on making the world come to life more fully. Many of the character movements in the Demon’s Souls remake look and feel more fluid when compared to the original, and the dynamic lighting effects help add to the game’s dark and oppressive atmosphere. Bluepoint is also adding a pre-order bonus scythe weapon, showing that the developer isn’t against adding entirely new content. That idea has provoked fan excitement for the possibility that Northern Limit area, which was cut from the original release, might now be playable. Footage of the incomplete area from the original has come to light thanks to data miners, but the possibility that a whole new section of the game could actually be playable may prompt veteran players to return to Boletaria.

Fans of FromSoftware games aren’t all open to changes being made to the beloved franchise. While the Demon’s Souls remake is certainly impressive looking, seeing the changes it makes side-by-side with the original might give some purists cause to worry. Whether the remake lives up to the expectations of die-hard fans or not, the original’s PS3 exclusivity means that the PS5 will soon be the easiest platform to play Demon’s Souls on, and now players have a much better idea of what they’re walking into.
