As the name of the show suggests, the main characters in Desperate Housewives were mostly married women who were lonely, sad, and misunderstood. While their relationships seemed perfect to an outside observer, they all had their own set of marital problems. Lynette and Tom Scavo were no different.

Lynette didn’t enjoy her role as a stay-at-home mom at all. Tom, on the other hand, didn’t appreciate his wife’s assertiveness and controlling tendencies, so he often used passive-aggressive tactics to get his own way. But despite their toxic dance of intimacy, they were victorious in the end. From Lynette’s struggle with cancer to Tom’s love child, they truly stayed by each other’s side both in sickness and in health, for better and for worse.

10 Goals: When Tom Experienced What It’s Like To Be Her For A Night

The basic problem of Tom and Lynette’s marriage was outlined in the very first episode of Desperate Housewives. As a stay-at-home mom, Lynette was at her wits’ end. She wasted all of her energy on trying to discipline her rowdy sons but to no avail. Tom, on the other hand, was typically away on business.

When he came home, he was glad to see his kids and couldn’t empathize with his wife’s complaints. That is until he was left alone with the kids one night. He finally realized what his wife had to go through on a day-to-day basis and started to appreciate the work she did at home.

9 Toxic: When Tom Opened Up A Pizza Parlor

Tom Scavo is not among the most likable husbands on Desperate Housewives. In season 3, he decided to make a drastic career change and buy a pizza restaurant. Lynette was against the idea because they had five kids to take care of and buying a pizzeria seemed like an incredibly risky business venture. Tom bought it without telling her.

Not only was opening the pizzeria a toxic move in the first place, but Tom was also extremely insecure every time Lynette did something highly beneficial for the place, such as securing the liquor license.

8 Goals: When Lynette Supported Tom’s Dream

While opening the pizza place was a toxic move, the Scavos later proved that they had it in them to be quite the unstoppable dream team when they put their differences aside and worked together. Not only did Lynette end up supporting Tom’s dream despite all the risk, but she also did an amazing job working there.

Lynette also stood by Tom’s side when Kayla came into their lives. Understandably, she wasn’t too thrilled about the fact that Tom had a secret love child, but she was willing to take responsibility for her upbringing after Nora had died. In return, Tom stood up for Lynette when Kayla was being problematic.

7 Toxic: Lynette Didn’t Want A Family

Before she got pregnant, Lynette was living her best life as a successful career woman. She genuinely enjoyed what she did, but it was all tgone when she had the twins. Even though she realized soon that she didn’t enjoy being a mother, she had two more children.

Resentment was slowly, but surely, building inside of her, and she took her frustrations out on both her husband as well as the kids. Her very first line in the series suggests that she was frustrated and tired of her lifestyle.

6 Goals: When They Tried Therapy

One of the things that certainly didn’t age well about Desperate Housewives is how therapy-averse most of the characters seemed to be and how therapists were portrayed.

Rather than living in denial, Lynette and Tom faced the music and tried couple’s counseling. In that regard, they were far more mature than other couples on the show, even though they weren’t sure what the goal of therapy was. Unfortunately, their therapist turned out to be highly unprofessional and biased.

5 Toxic: When Tom Felt Emasculated

Through the course of their marriage, Tom and Lynette were running in circles. Lynette always came across as controlling, while Tom played the victim card. Whenever his wife showed any sign of competence or had an opinion for that matter, he felt emasculated and threatened. His constant whining got old really fast.

After all, he got to do almost everything he wanted. He bought a pizzeria and started a band. Because he felt insecure, Tom used passive-aggressive tactics to bully Lynette and manipulate her into doing what he wanted.

4 Goals: They Were Always Attracted To Each Other

Despite all the stress at home and toxic power plays, Lynette and Tom remained attracted to each other until the very end.

In one episode, Lynette was worried about their sex life because they hadn’t slept together in ten days, claiming they had never had such a dry spell. It’s pretty impressive that they managed to keep the spark alive while raising four children and running a business.

3 Toxic: When Tom Started Dating Jane

The grass was always greener on the other side for Tom. Not only did he quit his corporate job to pursue his dream of owning a restaurant, but he also started pursuing another woman while he was still married to Lynette. Things moved really fast between Tom and Jane. In a matter of months, they moved in together and she started attending family celebrations.

While Lynette was trying in her own ways to save the marriage, Tom dealt with the crisis by dating somebody else. When Lynette and Tom reconciled, he didn’t give Lynette the apology she deserved.

2 Goals: When They Moved To New York

Just like Gaby and Carlos, Tom and Lynette also got their happy ending. In the end, they moved to New York where Lynette became a successful businesswoman.

Tom was a bit shocked at first but told Lynette that he would support her no matter what. It was refreshing to see Tom seriously considering his wife’s wishes rather than just look out for himself.

1 Toxic: Tom’s Wandering Eye & Lynette’s Jealousy

When the Scavos hired an attractive nanny in season 1, Tom walked in on her while she was wearing no clothes. Right after that, he went back to the bedroom to sleep with Lynette. In the following days, he kept staring at the girl as if she were an object, which made Lynette feel insecure. Even though the girl was a great influence on the kids – she got them to eat healthy food, for example – Lynette fired her.

In addition to peeping at nannies and making inappropriate comments about young women, Tom also slept with Lynette’s best friend while in college. They were on a break, but he should’ve told her nonetheless.
