Destiny 2 Removes Slogan With AntiSemitic History

Developer Bungie has responded to criticism by removing a historically anti-Semitic phrase from Destiny 2. The free-to-play online multiplayer first-person shooter launched back in 2017 as a sequel to 2014’s Destiny. Bungie is also well-known in the video game industry as the developer of iconic first-person shooter series Halo.

More than three years after release, Destiny 2 continues to receive post-launch support by Bungie. The game made the transition to the free-to-play format in 2019, using the new sub-title New Light, which marked a major change for the title. The latest season of the game, Season of the Chosen, began on February 9 and introduced content such as new gear, new Strikes and a new Battlegrounds game mode. A mysterious and apparently derelict spaceship, glimpsed briefly in the trailer for Season of the Chosen, was also revealed to be the site of a new Exotic quest which unlocks a Scout Rifle called Dead Man’s Tale.

Kotaku (via Game Rant) reports that Bungie recently received some criticism for a weekly challenge, introduced in Season of the Chosen, titled “Blood and Honor.” While seemingly harmless, this phrase actually bears anti-Semitic origins due to its use as a slogan by the Nazis’ Hitler Youth group. The challenge title is an English translation of the German “Blut und Ehre,” which makes many appearances in both fiction and non-fiction works based around World War II and the Third Reich. After receiving criticism for the use of the phrase on social media, a Bungie spokesperson reached out to Kotaku and indicated that the title of the challenge would be changed in an upcoming update. The statement reads:

“Any connection to anti-Semitism in Destiny is completely unintentional. Bungie is emphatically committed to inclusion and human rights, and will never stand for anti-Semitism. We are already preparing fixes in an upcoming patch. We apologize to all of our players that were hurt by the references, and we are grateful to our community for bringing their concerns to our attention.”

While Bungie has found great success with Destiny 2, particularly after the game’s shift to the free-to-play format, the legendary developer has even greater aspirations. The studio has announced plans for further growth in 2021, with a new leadership team leading the franchise’s expansion into other forms of media. A large headquarters and an international office were also detailed in these plans. Outside of Destiny, Bungie also announced that a video game belonging to a completely new intellectual property would be releasing by the year 2025, alongside whatever new Destiny content comes to light.

Through a string of highly successful games, Bungie has risen to become one of the video game industry’s top developers. However, with this success also comes an abundance of attention and scrutiny. While the “Blood and Honor” phrase may come across as harmless, its historical connection to the Nazi regime makes it offensive to many. The choice of this phrase as a challenge title in Destiny 2 comes across as tasteless, but Bungie’s fast an appropriate response should be commended.
