Exactly one year ago tomorrow, Bungie shook up the console gaming world when they released their mega-blockbuster, Destiny. Since that fateful day in September, Destiny has been the most talked about game in the industry, save for a few instances when a new game launched and stole the spotlight for a week or two. But in the end, Destiny is still king when it comes to console gaming…for now.

With such a stellar first year, Bungie is no doubt excited for things to come as they kick off Destiny Year Two today with Update 2.0.0. This update is no surprise to Destiny players, as Bungie has been sharing details about the patch for the last month. However, despite the preparation, the update still feels incredibly overwhelming.

The changes coming with Destiny Update 2.0 reach almost every facet of the game. Players can expect to see adjustments made to their characters, classes, weapons, weapon perks, activities, bounties, the Tower, and the Crucible.

Some of the most notable changes are the experience-based leveling, weapon balancing across the board, The Ghost’s new voice-over by Nolan North, and Light and Character Level are now two different stats.

All characters in the game will receive a level cap raise to level 34 an will increase as players collect experience points throughout the game. That will go up to 40 next week for those who purchase The Taken King. Light level will still play a part in the game, but will now be separated from character levels.

Also important are the plethora of weapon changes included in the patch. Bungie has made significant alterations to base damage, damage falloff, stability, recoil, and magazine size in some form or fashion for every weapon type in Destiny. Another big changes for weapons is the Year One weapons perks, which have been reduced to normalize them against Year Two weapon lethality. Additionally, Bungie has added some new stat perks to Year One launch weapons to compensate for weaker stat perks.

When it comes to in-game activities, Bungie has converted Year One activities into a Quest system to make sure those who don’t pick up The Taken King next week are able to complete the Year One questlines. Also, by making them quests, Bungie is giving Guardians a chance to replay the story for additional experience points that will help increase their character levels to the new cap. A new Quest screen has been added to the menu so players can track the various quests they would like to complete, up to four at a time.

In the past, one major complaint from Destiny players was Strike participants hiding in a corner so they can collect the end-of-activity loot without putting forth the effort to help their team. That is now changing with the new update, as Bungie is requiring all Strike players to participate in the boss fight to be eligible for the loot. Players can also earn bonus loot and reputation by cycling through the Strike playlist without returning to orbit.

Destiny’s Bounty system has been overhauled to reflect the new Quest system, and Bounty slots have been increased to 16, giving Guardians an opportunity to track more bounties at a time. Bounties will now be turned in for completion awards on the Quest Screen.

Finally, Bungie has changed things up a bit in the Crucible. For instance, the House of Wolves maps are now available to all Destiny players, and Guardians can preview the maps coming with The Taken King expansion from today through The Taken King’s release on September 15th. Players can also preview the Rift game mode from today through September 15th, and the Mayhem Clash mode from Friday, September 11th, to the release of The Taken King.

Year One Perks

We have revisted all of these Year One stat perks and reduced the amount they buff your weapon stat to re-normalize against Year Two weapon lethality and reinforce specialization so players are making meaningful trade-offs on weapons.

To compensate for the weaker stat perks from launch weapons, we added some new stat perks (introduced in House of Wolves) that provided a significant increase to a stat in exchange for a reduction in other stats. This allows players to be able to spike a stat that reinforces their specialized play style, but at a cost.
