Destiny: The Taken King’s Creative Director, Luke Smith, discusses Bungie’s decision to nix a few of the action-RPG’s more useful items before the expansion released.

Without a doubt, the sheer amount of content offered up by Destiny: The Taken King has kept plenty of Guardians busy since its release, especially now that developers have fixed Nightfall reward drops as promised. However, while the the action-RPG’s add-on has got plenty of solid loot and adventures, Bungie’s Creative Director Luke Smith recently explained that Destiny’s expansion could have contained a lot more, by revealing what happened to the Cryptarch’s corrupted engram missions.

Some fans may remember the Speaker offering to sell a slot-specific drop buff for the aforementioned raid, but they will also recall that the missions never actually made the cut for the final draft of the DLC. In an interview with Edge, The Taken King’s Creative Director discussed the matter, clarifying that their exclusion was due to malware, saying it was:

“Just bad, unfixable bugs we found in certification, so we punted them. There was another item that reset your Nightfall cooldown so you could run another one. We’re going to experiment with them in the future.”

Many fans might be disappointed by Smith’s statement about the items getting cut from the Cryptarch raid, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first instance of Destiny content getting altered or axed before the final version of the game was complete. Recently, multiple members of Bungie’s development team came forth anonymously to divulge that the studio forced creators to reboot the title’s story in the very late stages of the production process, leading to what many consider to be a convoluted mess of a narrative.

Of course, as a lot of people will agree, game development is no easy undertaking. During the course of creation, changes are bound to happen, and some things will inevitably get left on the cutting room floor before the end product is complete. Taking that into consideration, at least Bungie will soon rectify the recent problems encountered with Legendaries being rewarded at a much rarer rate with a bug fix for the Crucible’s loot drops.

Destiny: The Taken King is currently available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
