After eight seasons that ranked high on IMDb, the final episode of Dexter left many fans disappointed. Showtime has just announced that the show is coming back as mini-series, sparking hope to redeem the show’s reputation once and for all. It’s only coming to our screens in 2021, but fans already started theorizing what should and shouldn’t happen.

So far, no plot details have been released. Even the cast remains a huge mystery since the casting alone could give away several very telling hints about where the story will take us. Expectations are high: there are certain things that need to happen if fans are ever to forgive the botched ending.

One of the worst TV plot twists of the last decade was Dexter’s boat accident in the series finale. After dropping Deb’s body into the ocean, Dexter drove off into a hurricane with his little boat. It turns out that he survived, though, and that he moved to Oregon to work as a lumberjack.

The revival can’t pretend that this horrendous plot twist didn’t happen. We want to find out exactly how Dexter managed to survive a storm at sea. After all, he’s just a man, not a superhero.

7 Hannah Needs To Go

Hannah McKay entered the stage in season 7 and was last seen escaping to Argentina with Dexter’s son Harrison. Since she is also a serial killer at heart, there are chances that she will raise Harrison to be one as well. Dexter shouldn’t have left his only child with her since she is clearly too traumatized to be an appropriate mother figure.

No one hated Hannah more than Deb. If Deb was to really become Dexter’s dark passenger, it would only make sense that Dexter kills Hannah. She was one of the least likable characters on the show anyway. Let’s hope they don’t drag their story line throughout the whole season.

6 Revisiting Dexter’s Son Harrison

Since Dexter’s son Harrison saw his mother getting murdered just like his father did, it would only make sense if he followed in Dexter’s footprints. In 2021, Harrison should be about 12 years old, making him a bit too young to be a fully-fledged serial killer. It would make sense, however, that he reaches out to his estranged father.

Dexter often acted awkward around people, especially when it came to displaying emotions. Let’s see how he does with his grown son.

5 We Want Angel And Joey Back

When it comes to assessing which characters should make a comeback in the revival, the public opinion is clear: we want Angel Batista and Joey Quinn back. The last time we saw Joey was when he was in a depressed state. It would be nice to see him back in action, being a passionate cop like he used to be.

Angel Batista was a welcome presence on nearly every crime scene since the show’s beginning. In season 8, he became a lieutenant. In his last scene, he found out that Dexter is missing. Since he is one of his closest friends and he knows how intelligent Dexter is, it would only make sense that he intuitively knows that Dexter didn’t drown in that accident.

4 No Love Stories

Hopefully, the revival will steer clear of any kind of soppy love stories. It’s crazy to think that Dexter had eight romantic interests altogether. This time around, the show should focus on his criminal activity rather than emotions.

The original series also had several subplots that ultimately led nowhere. For example, all the drama surrounding LaGuerta was for nothing: once she found out about Dexter’s true identity, Debra shot her, wasting all that character development for nothing. There is no room for such characters in the revival.

3 It Needs To Answer For All The Years That Have Passed

It’s been years since Dexter wrapped up, so it’s safe to assume that the revival’s story will take place years after the mysterious boat accident. Not only would it be great to see exactly how did Dexter manage to get to Oregon, we are also wondering whether we are supposed to believe that all that Dexter did for the last decade was chopping wood.

Hopefully, the revival will give us some answers about what went down in all of the years that have passed. Is Dexter the same man as he used to be or did he change?

2 Dexter Has To Be Brought To Justice

One of the reasons Dexter didn’t age well is the fact that Dexter is let off the hook in the end. He is not brought in, nor is he killed. The revival should see him behind bars or dead since that’s the only way fans will get closure. Perhaps he could even join FBI and help them catch other serial killers. After all, his skills are highly valuable.

Fans often find themselves rooting for the murderous anti-hero. But as long as he is free, his story can’t be over.

1 Making Things Right After Butchering The Finale

Fans are generally excited about the revival, despite the disastrous finale. The revival can set things right again and fans are optimistic because Clyde Phillips is the showrunner. He gave us the first four seasons of Dexter and had nothing to do with the final seasons.

If there is anyone who can redeem this series, it’s him. He already promised that he won’t betray the audience and that he wants to treat revival as an independent project rather than the 9th season.
