Dexter Already Setup Exactly When He Should Die In Season 9

With Dexter season 9 likely signaling the end of the lovable serial killer’s journey, the original series already set up exactly what date he should die on. Michael C. Hall himself has described the exciting upcoming reboot, Dexter: New Blood as a way to amend the failures of the original series finale, which left a lot of fans sour about the show. After eight years off the air, Showtime is finally bringing back Dexter and a few beloved characters from the original series for a climactic closure to the show, including the return of the deceased Debra Morgan, who now serves as Dexter’s dark passenger, and his son Harrison, who is a teenager that may have inherited his father’s fixation on blood.

The fact that Dexter season 9 is a limited return is pretty telling for how Dexter Morgan’s character arc will end. The creators of the original Dexter series had planned on killing Dexter in the series finale until Showtime rejected the idea, where they resorted to the highly controversial ending in which Dexter abandons Harrison and Hannah and fakes his death to become a lumberjack in Oregon after Deb dies. Dexter dying would have made much more sense for the story arc as well as given closure to his character, so the most obvious way for Dexter: New Blood to fix the finale is to craft a tragic yet satisfying way to kill the main serial killer and end the series for good.

With Dexter’s doom being inevitable, the original series has already suggested a specific date for him to die on that would perfectly complete the symmetry of his character arc: October 3. Throughout the entire series, the number 103 reappears numerous times due to the deep, ingrained connection it has to the creation of Dexter’s dark passenger and his birth as a serial killer. The number is especially present in Dexter season 1 when his biological brother Brian Moser/The Ice Truck Killer taunts him about his past, using the number 103 as a hint to what he wants from Dexter. Brian leads Dexter to hotel room 103, sets the radio to FM 103, has the bible open to Leviticus 10:3. Additionally, Dexter’s apartment number is 10B, his courtroom appearance with Miguel is in number 103, and Zach’s season 9 photography studio is number 301 (reflected in the episode as 103) — the original series never ignores the significance of the date, and neither should Dexter season 9 when wrapping up his story.

The significance of 103 comes from the date of when the death of their mother Laura Moses was discovered and first reported about on October 3, 1973. The article Dexter reads states she was actually murdered on October 2, but Dexter wasn’t found and taken in by Harry Morgan until the next day, making October 3 a much more important date for the Moser brothers. October 3 is considered to be the day when Dexter was “born in blood,” where his need for blood and killing was instilled and his dark passenger took over. For Dexter’s character arc to truly be over, it would have to signal the death of his dark passenger, which he has recurrently implied he can’t get rid of until his death. In creating the perfect symmetry of Dexter’s life as a serial killer, he would have to be killed on October 3, ridding himself of the dark passenger on the same day that it was born.

Dexter: New Blood isn’t set to premiere until November, so it’s possible that’s exactly when the series is set and they won’t even be able to include October in the timeline. With how important the upcoming season is in completing Dexter’s character arc, it’s unlikely that Dexter’s creators — especially with Clyde Phillips back — would overlook resolving how his serial killing came about in the first place. It’s still likely that Dexter Morgan will die at the hands of a significant character, possibly even Harrison, in Dexter season 9, but it will be much more poetic if his tragic end also occurs on October 3 to have his story go full circle with the same date for his creation and demise.
