Dexter New Blood Wont Mention Quinn From Original Series

Dexter: New Blood will not feature the return of Joey Quinn, played by Desmond Harrington, from the original series. The ten-episode continuation brings back Michael C. Hall as the beloved title character and takes place ten years after the series finale in 2013. Clyde Phillips will be returning as the showrunner after departing the original series at the end of season 4. Dexter: New Blood will bring a slew of fresh faces, including Clancy Brown as the central villain and Julia Jones as Dexter’s girlfriend and Chief of Police, both of whom reside in Iron Lake in upstate New York, where Dexter has now relocated.

Even though the cast of Dexter: New Blood will be largely different, there will be returning members from the show’s original run, including Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter’s foul-mouthed sister, Debra, as his Dark Passenger, and John Lithgow as the beloved Trinity Killer from season 4, in a cameo flashback. With the incoming news of previous cast members making appearances in the revival, there have been many speculations of whether more will join the pack, including Joey Quinn, a detective from Dexter’s old days in the Miami Metro Homicide Department.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Phillips shared the status of Quinn, stating that Harrington will not be making an appearance in Dexter: New Blood. Harrington joined the show in season 3 and became a main cast member the following season. Despite confirmation that Quinn will not appear, Phillips teased that there will be homages to characters from Dexter’s past in Miami in his statement below:

“Quinn does not come up this year at all. Joey Quinn. He doesn’t. There are some other — I don’t know the difference between an Easter egg and a breadcrumb — But there are some tips of the hat to several of the characters.”

Out of many of the main characters in the original series, Quinn has had a closer tie to Dexter than most of the workers in Miami Metro. After the events of season 4 in which Dexter’s wife, Rita, was murdered by the Trinity Killer, Quinn starts to suspect and investigate Dexter’s involvement in the matter, while simultaneously beginning a relationship with Debra. While Dexter and Quinn have remained civil towards each other throughout the remainder of the series, there has always been tension between the characters, with the suspicion never fully erased or amounting to anything.

With Dexter being presumed dead, it makes sense that he would not run into Quinn or any of his co-workers in Miami many years later. However, it is evident that there will be many callbacks to earlier seasons and Dexter’s old life, with the appearance of Dexter’s son Harrison, who is all grown up and is certain to stir up conflict in Dexter’s new life. It will be interesting to see if any other familiar faces will appear when Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime on November 7.
