Dexter What Happened To Harrisons Mom Ritas Death Explained

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: New Blood episode 2, “Storm of F*ck.”

Harrison Morgan is reluctant in Dexter: New Blood to explain what happened to his dead mom, Rita, in the original series. The Showtime reboot recently premiered, incorporating both stark contrasts to the show’s last run and some elements and characters that fans know well. Along with a new, Dark Passenger version of Deb, a teenage version of Harrison (Jack Alcott) seeks out his father (played by Michael C. Hall), who faked his own death and fled Miami years prior. Dexter left Harrison with fellow serial killer Hannah McKay before starting his new life, because, unfortunately, his son’s real mother was no longer in the picture at the time.

However, the original Dexter series did begin with Harrison’s mother, Rita (Julie Benz), in the picture when it hit the air in 2006. This was when the world was first introduced to Dexter’s beloved anti-hero character. By day, he cleverly camouflaged his bloodlust and homicidal urges by working as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. By night, he stalked other killers to spare the innocent while satiating his “Dark Passenger.” From Dexter seasons 1-4, the titular character dated, and eventually married, Rita. Rita already had two children of her own from a previous relationship, and the family eventually totaled up to five people when the couple had their own son, Harrison.

After Dexter and Harrison recently reunited at the end of Dexter: New Blood episode 1, “Cold Snap,” it may have struck some series newcomers as odd when the two never mentioned Rita at all. Unfortunately, in addition to what would’ve been a short span of time to include such dialogue, there’s good reason for why her character isn’t discussed. Tragedy struck the Morgan family unit long before Dexter left Miami, when his sweet wife, Rita, was murdered and left in a bathtub by John Lithgow’s fan-favorite show villain, Arthur Mitchell/”the Trinity Killer,” at the end of season 4. After Dexter and Mitchell butted heads, the latter character killed Rita as retaliation for Dexter’s thwarting some of his murder plans and to further emphasize how the main character can never escape his Dark Passenger and who he truly is.

As if Rita’s tragically and disturbingly memorable character death from the original Dexter series wasn’t awful enough for fans — as well as the family her character left behind — to process, the event was even more gutwrenching and damaging due to the fact that a baby version of Harrison was found sitting in his dead mother’s blood. Of course, this directly paralleled Dexter’s own horrifying childhood experience with the exact same scenario. It’s certainly understandable as to why he and Harrison haven’t rehashed any of this, or anything related to it, so far. And Harrison’s reaction to fellow teens inquiring about his mother’s death in episode 2 only confirms what a touchy subject is still is so many years later.

The loss of a parent is devastating anyway, let alone if the cause of death is a gory murder. Plus, after Dexter’s own (feigned) death, little Harrison was forced to grow up without either of his parents — subsequently navigating all sorts of trauma without a father that was still very much alive. These will all surely be layered issues for Dexter and Harrison to unpack throughout New Blood. The weighty and emotional charge attached to them makes it more than understandable why Harrison most likely wants to leave as much of it behind as he can.
