Diablo 4 Character Classes That Should Return From Previous Games

The world of Diablo 4, the latest installment in Blizzard’s famous hack-and-slash RPG franchise, will rarely be kind to the heroes who live in it. But heroes rise up, regardless, to banish the malevolent Diablo and the other demonic Prime Evils from their world of Sanctuary. The four heroes revealed so far for the upcoming Diablo 4 – the Barbarian, Druid, Sorceress, and Rogue – are all returning character classes from Diablo 1, 2, and 3, and there is no shortage of “classic” Diablo classes that could and should return in Diablo 4.

In Diablo 1, a Warrior, a Rogue, and a Sorcerer journeyed deep into the cathedral labyrinth beneath the town of Tristram to slay Diablo, Lord Of Terror, each of them becoming corrupted in some way by the evil they sought to slay. In its sequel, Diablo 2, an Assassin, Amazon, Paladin, Druid, Sorceress, Barbarian, and Necromancer pursued the corrupted heroes of Diablo 1 across the land, working with the Archangel Tyrael against the evil of the resurrected Diablo and his brothers: Baal, Lord Of Destruction, and Mephisto, Lord of Hatred. And in Diablo 3, a group of Nephalem champions – a Barbarian, Crusader, Wizard, Witch Doctor, Necromancer, Monk, and Demon Hunter – rise to protect Sanctuary from the forces of Hell and Heaven alike.

The trailers released for Diablo 4 so far have revealed new heroes and, more notably, a new villain, the ancient demon Lilith, one of the mythical creators of the human world of Sanctuary. Gameplay footage and cutscenes also suggests Diablo 4 will return to the darker atmosphere of the first two Diablo games, one where madness, death, and fates far worse await the heroes who strive against the resurgent demonic threat. Ideally, Diablo 4 will, like previous titles, introduce new character classes for player to try out, but if Blizzard decides to re-introduce more old character classes, the following would be ideal picks.

Diablo Classes That Should Return: Crusader/Paladin

What’s the point of having demonic invaders if there aren’t holy warriors to smite them? The Paladin of Diablo 2 and the Crusader of Diablo 3 may have different titles, but carry the same zealous faith and wield the same type of holy magic in their battles against the forces of Hell. In a setting where the primary religious faith, the Church of Zakarum, is riddled with corruption and demonic infiltration, the holy warriors of the Diablo games stand out as genuine paragons whose faith inspires them to protect, rather than persecute, the people of Sanctuary. Mechanically, their combination of protective abilities, healing powers, and evil-smiting spells also nicely caters to the defensive, frontline playstyle certain Diablo 4 players will want to adopt.

Diablo Classes That Should Return: Necromancer

Also appearing in both Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, the Necromancer class stands out from other spellcasting classes with their ability to curse enemies, raise armies of skeletons and golems, and blast enemies with sprays of blood and bone. In other RPGs, a necromancer would be a vile villain, but in the Diablo universe, Necromancers are firmly devoted to the destruction of the Prime Evils, motivated by a philosophy focused on maintaining balance between the forces of good and evil. In terms of gameplay, their powers would be ideal for Diablo 4 players who want to control the battlefield with a mix of minion-summoning and debuff abilities.

Diablo Classes That Should Return: Amazon

The Amazon class of Diablo 2 was portrayed as a fierce warrior from a nomadic jungle culture, stumbling across the schemes of Diablo and the rest of the Prime Evils while working as a mercenary. Mechanically, they were designed to be a fighter capable at multiple ranges, peppering foes with arrows and javelins from a distance, then fending off foes in melee with spear thrusts and summoned Valkyries. By introducing this character class in Diablo 4, Blizzard could present the Amazon as a more melee-friendly alternative to Diablo 4’s Rogue.

Diablo Classes That Should Return: Monk

Few things are as “hardcore” as someone punching demons to death with their bare hands and feet. For this reason alone, the Monk character class of Diablo 3 should definitively make a return in Diablo 4. Mechanically, their combination of destructive, Spirit-fueled abilities, dashes, and teleportation makes them a good fit for players who want the offensive power of a melee class combined with the mobility and damage avoidance of a Rogue. Thematically, the faith of monks in the world of Diablo, an animistic creed devoted to the reverence of 1,001 gods, is also intriguingly distinct from the monotheistic faith of Zakarum upheld by Paladins and Crusaders.
