Did Loki Secretly Erase Characters From The Trailer

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Loki episode 4.

With the surprise credits scene in Loki, it appears Marvel’s Disney+ series secretly erased characters from its trailers. In Loki episode 4, “The Nexus Event,” the Time-Keepers are exposed as a lie. After being captured by the Time Variance Authority, Lady Loki (Sophia Di Martino) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) are brought before the Time-Keepers to be executed, a.k.a. “pruned.” However, the pair fight their way free and manage to lop the head off of one of the Time-Keepers. It turns out the Time-Keepers are just robots, and someone else is secretly pulling the strings at the TVA. Shortly after the revelation, Loki gets pruned by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), supposedly disappearing from existence.

A Loki credits scene reveals the God of Mischief isn’t quite dead yet. At the end of Loki episode 4, the trickster wakes up in what seems to be a different timeline. “Am I dead?” Loki asks. “Not yet,” a voice answers, “But you will be unless you come with us.” Loki realizes he’s in front of multiple other Loki variants who were presumably also pruned. They include Boastful Loki (DeObia Oparei), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), and Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant). For good measure, there’s even an Alligator or Crocodile Loki. The scene opens up the possibility that other pruned Loki variants could also return.

The end-credits scene seems to expose a Marvel Cinematic Universe trick. When Loki wakes up, he and the other Loki variants appear to be in the ruins of New York City. For evidence, a wrecked Avengers Tower looms in the background as an MCU Easter egg. Interestingly, the location was also shown in the Loki trailer. It was previously believed to be a scene of an alternate timeline, showing a future where Loki won in 2012’s The Avengers. However, the Loki variants were nowhere to be found in the trailer shot, hinting that there’s trickery afoot.

With the credits reveal, Marvel is apparently admitting to erasing characters from its trailers. The shot of New York City shown in the original Loki trailer appears to depict the events immediately following the credits scene. Loki is wearing the same clothes, and the Avengers Tower is also present. The absence of the new Loki variants in the shot seemingly indicates the scene was altered for the trailer to hide spoilers. Loki also did this with a scene from the trailer depicting Lamentis-1. In Loki episode 3, Loki and Lady Loki frantically run through the streets of a city on Lamentis-1, trying to escape the apocalypse. But in the trailer, only a mysterious hooded character is seen running in the scene. Lady Loki wasn’t revealed until Loki episode 2, so the altered trailer footage was a way to hide her identity.

Marvel is known for occasionally altering its trailers, and the confirmation that it did so with Loki opens up numerous possibilities. The Loki trailers still have multiple scenes that haven’t appeared in the series yet, including shots of Asgard and Loki wearing a campaigning button. These too could be altered when they finally air, possibly revealing even more interesting Loki variants or proving some previous speculation wrong. While the truth about the Time-Keepers is a major reveal, the altered scenes could be hiding even bigger twists. Regardless, the God of Mischief is all about deception, and that trickery apparently even extends to the Loki trailers.
