Did Marvel Just KILL A Member of Visions Family

This article contains spoilers for Outlawed #1.

Marvel Comics just seemingly killed a member of the Vision’s family. Marvel Comics has always been well-known for its teenage superheroes; after all, Peter Parker was just a teenager on that fateful day when he was bitten by a radioactive spider. But this week’s Outlawed event is about to change everything for those young heroes.

The core concept is, amusingly enough, identical to that of 2006’s much-loved Civil War event. A traditional superhero fight escalates out of control, and as a result, the authorities pass a well-intentioned law that tears the superhero community apart. This time, it’s a law prohibiting teenage vigilantism, with anyone under the age of 21 only allowed to openly act as a superhero if they have a dedicated mentor. Every one of Marvel’s young heroes is caught up in the event, which spills out of a Champions mission gone wrong.

The Champions are attempting to protect a young activist – clearly modeled on Greta Thunberg – who’s been targeted for assassination by Roxxon. Unfortunately, they underestimated Roxxon’s resources, because it seems the sinister organization secretly kept a dragon from last year’s War of the Realms event, and they unleash the creature in New Jersey. Kamala Khan’s job is to get the target safely out of Coles Academy, but that leaves the rest of the Champions rudderless. As a result, they stop working as a team, with each of the Champions pursuing a separate strategy. Power Man channels a massive Chi blast through one of Pinpoint’s portals – but Viv Vision gets in the way.

In a shocking twist, the magic of the Chi Blast combines with Viv’s phasing power. She somehow begins to draw electricity out of the air like a lightning rod, ravaging New Jersey, and bringing down Coles Academy. Ironheart, Nova, and Nadia Pym’s Wasp realize they have no choice but to neutralize Viv before anyone else gets hurt. They detonate an electromagnetic pulse on a molecular level just as Viv begins to phase, causing her to apparently self-destruct in a horrific burst of energy.

The story of Outlawed #1 is a heartbreaking one because the Champions – for all their high ideals – have made critical errors that resulted in the loss of life, and ultimately led to the apparent death of one of their own. Only time will tell whether Viv Vision really is dead, of course; it’s possible she was transforming into an energy state, and thus has somehow survived. Meanwhile, the Champions themselves are deeply scarred by the whole experience. Ironheart will be particularly devastated, because she and Viv were close friends; Viv had, at times, hoped they would be more than that. Even the Avengers are shaken by the tragedy, because of course, Vision has lost his daughter. The fallout from all this is going to run on for quite some time – making Outlawed a seriously promising event.

Outlawed #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
