Director Tom Holland’s Horror Movies Ranked Worst To Best

Tom Holland has proven himself to be a formative director who really made his mark on the horror genre in the ‘80s, but it’s worth taking a look at all of his contributions and how they hold up.

Tom Holland isn’t a name in horror that always gets thrown around, but he’s made some very important films during his time in the industry. Even before Holland shifted over to directing he penned the scripts for some fantastic horror films like Psycho II, The Beast Within and the genre picture Cloak & Dagger. He’s a filmmaker that has a clear passion for horror and it’s easy to see why a number of his movies have gone on to have sequels and franchises due to the rich worlds and stories that he creates.

Holland’s films were a dominant presence through the 1980s and he still made some interesting efforts in the ‘90s. However, even though Holland is still in the picture, his output has largely died off in more recent years. Hopefully Holland isn’t completely done with horror, but until he puts out something new it feels like a fitting time to revisit Tom Holland’s filmography and how his horror contributions hold up.

5. Rock, Paper, Scissors (2019)

It’s nice to have Tom Holland back in the director’s chair with Rock, Paper, Scissors, but it feels like it’s practically a different filmmaker at work. The movie looks at a seemingly reformed serial killer’s ability to stay on the straight path as he’s repeatedly tested by those around him. There are some decent ideas at work here as far as serial killer stories are concerned, but it’s such a bleak and nihilistic film overall.

4. Thinner (1996)

Thinner may be a terrible movie, but it’s at least in the “so bad it’s good” category. Tom Holland adapts the Stephen King novel of the same name that looks at a man’s rapid deterioration after he gets a curse placed on him. Thinner features some commendable special features and some especially absurd deaths, but it nearly feels like a parody of a horror film. King’s original story isn’t the author’s strongest work, but this is a far cry from Holland’s better films.

3. The Temp (1993)

Holland’s The Temp veers more into the territory of suspenseful thriller than outright horror, but it still contains a respectable body count and enough trademarks of the genre to qualify. The Temp is Holland’s contribution to the era of thrillers from the ‘90s that capitalized on vengeful, jilted women, like Basic Instinct or Disclosure. Lara Flynn Boyle makes for a satisfying femme fatale, but the film’s tone is a little too uneven and the finished product doesn’t come together as well as Holland’s other efforts.

2. Fright Night (1985)

After enough occasions where he was dissatisfied with the final product of some of his screenplays, Fright Night marks Tom Holland’s directorial debut and it’s an incredibly strong first film. The movie tells a sprawling story about vampires that pairs together an unlikely duo who turn into one of the genre’s most memorable teams. Passionate performances, likable characters, and a love for the genre all help Fright Night soar and are why the quirky vampire film remains in the public consciousness.

1. Child’s Play (1988)

Child’s Play has grown into a massive franchise with a TV series on the way, but Tom Holland’s simple, yet effective film helped put everyone’s favorite killer doll on the map. Child’s Play looks at Andy’s simple mission to survive against his murderous toy. A film of this nature could easily be a disaster or just plain laughable, but Holland creates something truly frightening. The practical effects work in the film still holds up remarkably well, too.
