10 Because of Winn-Dixie
Kate DiCamillo penned the excellent children’s novel Because of Winn-Dixie, which became a movie in 2005. In her breakout role as Opal, AnnaSophia Robb is charming and delightful.
While her dad is busy being a preacher, Opal saves a stray dog, naming him Winn-Dixie as he misbehaves at the supermarket. This is one of the best summer movies for kids, and it’s hard to believe that it came about fifteen years ago!
9 College Road Trip (2008)
Raven-Symoné and Martin Lawrence are the perfect father-daughter duo in College Road Trip. For Melanie, the sky is the limit when it comes to a college education.
Her dad thinks the world of her and knows she is successful, but he would much rather keep her close to home. Chaos ensues when they hash it out on a college road trip. It’s the perfect adventure to watch this summer.
8 The Princess Diaries 2 (2004)
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement will help you imagine the ideal Genovian vacation. The Queen is ready to hand off her crown.
That means that Mia has to roll up her sleeves and find a husband ASAP, but the search takes an unexpected turn. As sequels go, this is one of the absolute best. Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine are so believable as they fall in love, and the joys of summer are evident as the plot thickens.
7 The Last Song (2010)
See where it all began for Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus. You might be surprised to see this edgy teen romance on Disney’s streaming service, but no complaints!
The story will sweep you away just like the Nicholas Sparks book does. Though much of the plot is quite serious, there are enough bright summer scenes to last you the whole season.
6 Muppet Treasure Island (1996)
This one is for the kid in all of us. Set sail with the Muppet version of the Robert Louis Stevenson tale. What could go wrong when Kermit is in charge?
Released after Jim Henson’s passing, the film retained the Muppet charm that is expected in any of these movies, complete with music, adventure, and danger on the hunt for treasure. Don’t worry–the 1950 movie, sans Muppets, is also available if that is more your style.
5 Pollyanna (1960)
Young Hayley Mills brings the childhood story of Pollyanna to life. The 1960 film is based on the 1913 book by Eleanor H. Porter. Pollyanna is an orphan with an impossibly positive outlook on life, thus coining the term “pollyanna,” an overly optimistic person who always looks on the bright side.
Watch Pollyanna bring joy to her Aunt Polly, with whom she goes to live, and her entire town.
4 Cool Runnings (1993)
This film, based on a true story, begins in Jamaica, 1987. The music and scenery in the opening credits will immediately relax you and put you in summer mode.
Derice Bannock (Leon) and Sanka Coffie (Doug E. Doug) cool things off quickly when they head to Calgary to compete as Olympic bobsledders, forming the first Jamaican team. Definitely a fun adventure for the whole family.
3 The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)
Summer of 2003 brought legions of fans their dream movie: The Lizzie McGuire Movie. The big-screen picture doesn’t get the esteemed title of DCOM, but it was still a pretty solid addition to the franchise.
Lizzie gets the trip of a lifetime, but she gets caught up in the rush of fame and celebrity when she is mistaken for an Italian pop star. You probably know the story, so throw this on whenever you need an easy reminder of that age-old summer in Rome.
2 The Parent Trap (1998)
The Parent Trap remake of 1998 is the ultimate family summer movie. Watch Annie and Hallie meet coincidentally at summer camp. They start out as archenemies and become close while they’re suspended from camp activities in “the isolation cabin.”
Of course, their parents are drawn back together, with a little help from the plotting twins. Lindsay Lohan nailed this double role, and it’s still a Disney fan favorite.
1 Hamilton (2020)
For the first time ever, Hamilton is available in film format for Disney+ streamers (beginning July 3). Disney+ is correct in stating that the Broadway musical “has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.” In its run, the Lin-Manuel Miranda creation has been so successful that tickets simply haven’t been accessible for a lot of people.
It’s awesome that subscribers will now get to see this depiction of American history, filmed in June of 2016 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
