Senior Vice President of Walt Disney Games Sean Shoptaw revealed that fans can expect future console games featuring classic Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse and the Disney Princess line-up.

The distinct lack of traditional Disney brands in its upcoming console video games releases came up during an interview with GamesIndustry’s James Batchelor. “We agree with you,” Shoptaw responded. “[We] think there’s many more stories to tell. We love the original characters, Mickey and crew. We think there’s enormous opportunity and it’s a very underserved part of our portfolio today, especially on the console side. I think you’ll start to see that… there’s a lot more to come.”

Disney’s mascot Mickey Mouse has not had a dedicated appearance in a full console video game since his 3D platformer series Epic Mickey, which had its last release Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two in 2012 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and Wii U. However, he did make an appearance in the 2019 RPG Kingdom Hearts III as King Mickey.

Batchelor also spoke with Luigi Priore, Vice President of Disney & Pixar Games, about capitalizing on nostalgia via re-releases of older games akin to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Priore agreed with the sentiment, but stressed that the gaming branch’s focus is elsewhere. “Yes, we want to revisit and deliver that nostalgia, but also we have to take it in a new way,” Priore said. “”You’re not always going to be satisfied with just playing the exact same game, right? The Aladdin/Lion King — you can play that, and maybe your kids will play that but even though it runs out of modern systems, it might not be of the modern times of what we expect from games.”

Despite the lack of traditional Disney characters appearing in recent console releases, Disney-owned properties made a large appearance during last week’s E3 gaming event. Marvel’s Avengers publisher Square Enix announced Marvel’s Guardians of Galaxy, an upcoming single-player action-adventure game that will allow players to play as Star-Lord and command the other Guardians during combat. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was announced by publisher Ubisoft as a first-person action-adventure game set in the unexplored Western Frontier on the Na’vi planet Pandora. Star Wars was noticeably absent at E3; however, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order received a next-gen console release shortly before the expo.

Most notably, Sea of Thieves announced a free expansion for the online multiplayer game subtitled A Pirate’s Life, which will prominently feature characters from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, including Captain Jack Sparrow. Players will explore a campaign which will have them free Sparrow from imprisonment and help him escape pursuit from Davy Jones. Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life will be available for free to all Sea of Thieves players who previously bought the game on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 PC or via Steam on June 22. The expansion will also be available to players who have access to the game with the Xbox Game Pass.
