Disney is Moving Away From Using Slave 1 Name for Boba Fetts Ship

It appears that Disney is distancing itself from the canonical name of Star Wars bounty hunter Boba Fett’s ship, Slave I. A longstanding fan-favorite of the spacefaring franchise since his debut in 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special, Fett has evolved as Star Wars has expanded across subsequent movies and TV shows. Despite significant developments for the vigilante, one iconic element of Boba Fett has endured: his heavily modified ‘Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft’, Slave I. Formerly his father Jango’s ship, its name hinted at the dark past of the Fett family and their targets.

Of the myriad ways the Star Wars series has been made into merchandise over the years, one of the most successful has unquestionably been LEGO’s line of officially licensed model kits. Fett’s craft made its first appearance in 2000, receiving numerous, progressively more advanced, iterations in the years since. Licensed LEGO sets have long served as a sneak peek at many movies – not just Star Wars – but few have signaled such potentially seismic approaches to source material.

Now, Jedi News and interviewer James Burns has revealed that Disney, who took over stewardship of Star Wars in 2015, is rescinding Slave I’s famous name. Queried about the soft reset of ‘Boba Fett’s Starship,’ LEGO Star Wars Design Director Jens Kronvold Frederiksen and Lead Designer Michael Lee Stockwell had this to say:

Stockwell: Yes, I built another. We’re not calling it Slave I anymore. This is Boba Fett’s Starship.

Burns: OK, why are we dropping the Slave I name?

Frederiksen: Everybody is. It’s probably not something which has been announced publicly but it is just something that Disney doesn’t want to use anymore.

Whether it signals a name change for Slave 1 in the TV shows remains to be seen, fans of Fett’s ship can rest easy knowing it’s due to make its return to screens soon. The Mandalorian season 2 not only reintroduced the bounty hunter to Disney+ subscribers with a bang but revealed that a spinoff series, The Book of Boba Fett was also in the works. It debuts this December, and if a season-ending stinger is anything to go by, it will be a worthy continuation of the armored assassin’s adventures.

While an official reason for the change is yet to be given by the company, the controversial real-world connotations of the ship’s name are likely responsible. Disney has towed a safe line with the Star Wars franchise since 2015’s blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens, receiving ire from several fans online as a result. Around the time of the movie’s release, it was reported that Princess Leia’s iconic ‘Slave Leia’ bikini would feature much less prominently in merchandise for the series going forwards. Given that this new LEGO interpretation of ‘Boba Fett’s Starship’ will be ostensibly marketed towards children, it seems to be another case of overcautiousness on the company’s part to steer clear of any potential controversy.
