Disney is developing a live-action reboot of Robin Hood, its 1973 animated classic that reimagined the legend’s cast of characters as animals.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blindspotting director Carlos Lopez Estrada will direct the film. Kari Granlund, who penned Disney+’s Lady and the Tramp remake, will write the script. The film is planned as a musical with anthropomorphic CGI characters based in live action.

In the world of Disney’s Robin Hood, every character was reimagined as an animal: Robin Hood and Maid Marian were foxes; Little John was a bear; Friar Tuck, a badger; Prince John, a lion; the sheriff of Nottingham, a wolf; and so on. It appears Disney’s live-action remake will retain these characterizations.

Likewise, since Robin Hood will be a musical, it will likely include popular songs from the original film, like the Oscar nominated track “Love” and “Oo De Lally.”

Disney closed its deals for the film in early March, shortly before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began to impact North America. As a result, the movie has not moved beyond early development. At the time of writing, it is unclear how the pandemic will impact the process, even as the studio shuffles its film slate to accommodate closed theaters and social distancing practices.

Directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada and written by Kari Granlund, Disney’s live-action Robin Hood remake does not yet have a release date.
