Despite not releasing any films within their MCU slate for 2020, Marvel Studios and Disney + are clearly setting up for extending the MCU in more ways than ever imagined before. Disney + and Marvel have a diverse lineup of upcoming TV shows which will connect to the MCU canon.
Joining the MCU are shows such as Falcon & The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and more. That’s right folks before we even get a Mark Ruffalo-led Hulk film, Disney + and Marvel Studios will bring the lawyer by day, Avenger by night, She-Hulk to on-demand TV. Here’s what we know so far.
10 Who is She-Hulk?
She-Hulk is Jennifer Susan Walters, a lawyer who, after an injury, receives an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner (The Hulk), and thus acquires a toned-down version of the Hulk condition which he suffers from. Much like Banner, Walters is able to transform into a powerful green version of herself, however, unlike Banner, Walters still retains her human psyche and personality, for the most part when she transforms.
9 Who will play She-Hulk?
During a Disney investor meeting earlier this month, Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige, confirmed that the Emmy-winning actress Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) would take on the role of Jennifer Walters in Disney +’s show, confirming the rumors which have been doing the rounds since September.
8 Why Is Maslany The Perfect Casting?
After several rumors circulating on the web, with names such as Betty Gilpin, Alison Brie, and Kerry Washington being fan favorites to play She-Hulk, Marvel shocked the world by announcing Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany as the actress stepping in the shoes of Jennifer Walters.
As she has proven with her work in BBC America’s Orphan Black, Maslany is perfectly suited to take on a dramatic role that also delves into comedic territory.
7 Disney +’s She-Hulk’s Plot
While details surround the plot of Disney +’s upcoming She-Hulk are yet to be confirmed, the comics might shed some light on the possible plot of the upcoming show. In Marvel’s She-Hulk comics, Jen takes a bullet from a henchman of a crimelord who has it out for her father, the sheriff. She needs a blood transfusion from a family member, and just her luck, the only available donor, is none other than her cousin, Bruce Banner, aka The Hulk. Jen’s newly infused gamma-irradiated blood gives her the ability to hulk out and much like her cousin, She-Hulk is incredibly strong, super-fast, and heals notably fast. Unlike Banner in the earlier MCU films though, Jen retains her emotional psyche and intelligence when she transforms.
6 Lawyer By Day, Avenger By Night
She-Hulk’s premise is almost too easy to pitch to modern focus groups in 2020. A single female lawyer, living in NYC who is also an Avenger by night. This is actually the premise for a 2014 She-Hulk comic by writer Charles Soule, who was a practicing legal eagle back then, artist Javier Pulido and colorist Munsta Vincente. After years of guest-starring in the comics of other, well-known superheroes, Soule and his creative team took Jen Walkers to the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, where she practices law, defending other superhuman people.
5 Abomination Returns
One of the MCU’s earliest onscreen villains will make his return to She-Hulk. Tim Roth will reprise his role as The Abomination.
Roth hasn’t played Hulk’s powerhouse nemesis since his appearance in the second MCU movie, The Incredible Hulk. In the film, Abomination was captured after a rampage, and is still locked up – his fate left up in the air after Edward Norton left the franchise to be replaced by Mark Ruffalo.
4 A Female Villain?
In addition to Tim Roth making his return as Banner’s nemesis (At least in the MCU), Abomination, fans will be thrilled to learn that the series will allegedly also feature a female villain to put She-Hulk to the test. All we know for now is, that this villain will go under the codename, Lucy. As per the description on the official Marvel website, Lucy is a social media expert, with a dark past and is expected to play a significant role and will appear in as many as five episodes.
3 Who Are The Showrunners?
Marvel’s She-Hulk will be led by a female powerhouse team, including Jessica Gao, who has in the past won an Emmy for her work on the Rick and Morty episode, ‘Pickle Rick’. Gao joins the team as head writer. Her other credits include Robot Chicken and Silicon Valley. Joining the show in directorial positions are Kat Coiro from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Mick and Anu Valia (Never Have I Ever).
2 Can You Expect MCU Cameos In She-Hulk?
At this point, it’s clear that many of the Disney+ slate of TV shows will include multiple cameos from MCU alumni and new, familiar faces too. Mark Ruffalo is set to appear as Bruce Banner in She-Hulk. The news was confirmed by Kevin Feige earlier this month.
As mentioned above, Tim Roth will also be reprising his role as The Abomination. You can expect to see many of your MCU favorites. Earlier this month, Disney released a series synopsis which also stated that She-Hulk would welcome several Marvel characters to the upcoming Disney + series.
1 She-Hulk Release Date
Unfortunately, She-Hulk will not premiere in 2021. At this stage, no official release date has been announced. With Marvel’s current slate of shows premiering in 2021, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, and more, fans will only be treated to Jennifer Walter’s first appearance in the MCU in 2022.
