One of the most memorable and impactful Disney Channel original movies, that later hit theaters, is High School Musical. The musical film stole young kids’ hearts and carried them throughout their adulthoods, later becoming a staged musical for schools, an entire film trilogy, and now a Disney+ television show.

The Romeo and Juliet theme the film abides by is met with relatable high school drama, sticking to “the status quo,” and learning to break it later. Aside from the hilarious moments that fans remember from the entire film series, the first movie has scenes that still make viewers laugh today. Even some of the smallest moments in one scene can affect the scene’s entirety.

10 Gabriella’s Mathematical Explanation

Although this is a small scene within a larger day in the film, fans will run to defend this cute little scene when their favorite leading lady appears to teach the math team a complex equation on the board.

The scene is only funny in two ways. The first way is because, to younger viewers, she’s apparently writing a huge equation and ending it by asking, “You get it?” with the sweet smile she typically wears. Most younger viewers find this a little funny because they sit in their seats trying to decipher what on earth Gabriella is nonchalantly writing on the board. The second reason it’s funny is that for the older viewers who can recognize the math on the board, they laugh at how every single member of the group seems to easily understand it within that five second-screen time.

9 The Auditions Sign-Ups Sheet

Just as Gabriella and Troy look at East High’s drama club auditions sheet, Sharpay marches in and scribbles her autographed signature in large print all over the sheet.

This scene, in particular, makes viewers laugh to this day because of her sheer and strong passive aggression she carries with her. Since this is one of her main introductions in front of Gabriella, fans giggle at the sight of her silent but deadly, and daggering, demeanor.

8 Sharpay & Ryan’s “Audition”

Since Sharpay and Ryan basically established themselves already at their school, and just audition to show off, their “What I’ve Been Looking For” duet manages to cause some laughter among viewers.

Throughout their entire time on stage, the camera cuts to some hilarious moments that create an overall hilarious scene. Sharpay and Ryan have a slight slip-up on-stage, followed by Sharpay’s expected annoyance and irritation. Even Troy and Gabriella (who are sitting all the way in the back of the auditorium) make crinkled faces at the sight of how obnoxious yet brilliant the brother-sister duo is. Sharpay ends their scene by belittling Kelsey, which isn’t funny, but she has the audacity to say a fake, sweet “goodbye” remark into the microphone. Classic Sharpay, covering her tracks. These actions in the scene make it an unexpectedly hilarious scene.

7 First Day With Ms. Darbus

Ms. Darbus is anything but simple. This erratic and strict drama teacher makes the student know that she will not tolerate anyone messing up or sabotaging her musical.

She swift to snatch up the students’ cell phones, and it’s in her quick-paced punishments that make the scene laughable. Both the viewers and the students don’t even have time to process who else she’s going to catch in the act of texting, but of course, she manages to swipe Gabriella on her first day when she simply looks at her phone and notices that Troy is calling her. While Ms. Darbus is easy to despise, this scene is truly comical.

6 The Screaming “Callbacks” Scene

Well, every fan is accustomed to Sharpay’s bratty screams. This scene will always ring in fans’ ears as this is Sharpay’s first loud reaction to something that went wrong for her.

“CALLBACKS?! AAHHH!” is the shock heard ’round East High, as Sharpay hilariously panics at the sight of something that isn’t in her perfect little reality. Seeing Gabriella and Troy’s names as her competition causes her stress can appear funny to viewers.

5 Detention

The first part of this scene that’s funniest is that Ms. Darbus shamelessly throws all her detention-ites into doing more work for her school musical.

Darbus tortures her students with an everlasting speech on how theatre is a “precious cornucopia of creative energy,” (which is a good point!), and fans watch as Chad clumsily falls asleep in a stage prop tree, with Troy sitting atop, teasing his friend with another prop to wake him up. Although it’s not a long scene, clearly, it makes its mark in the film as a relatable after-school, pointless detention.

4 “Ma-Ma-Ma-Ma” Warmup

If it wasn’t Sharpay’s loud bursts for fans to recall, it’s in her and Ryan’s theatrical warm-ups. While performers make strong arguments as to why they should obviously warm up their vocals before a live performance, the film makes it very obvious that the duo’s warm-ups are hyperbolized comedy.

HSM fans will remember Sharpay and Ryan’s back-and-forth “Ma Ma Ma Ma” sounds, followed by other weirder sounds they sing and belt out for this few-second scene, prior to hitting the stage to sing “Bop to the Top.” This warm-up scene is commemorated throughout the trilogy and became a common joke for performers to exaggerate their vocal exercises backstage.

3 Troy & Gabriella Rushing To Rehearse

The entire scene includes a bunch of little adorably awkward, thus funny, moments as both students readjust their schedules to also include rehearsals with Kelsey. However, the real comedy is through Troy’s moves.

First, the teen decides to check out his reflection, flip his hair, and point to the mirror as he’s running out of the locker room toward the rehearsal room. Next, as Troy waits for Gabriella to meet up with him, he checks his watch, except there isn’t a watch on his wrist. That’s right! The basketball star really checks the time on an invisible device, which couldn’t be more obvious. Fans speculate whether Zac Efron made this move as a mistake or if it was intentional. Either way, it’s a move that makes this one of the funniest scenes.

2 “The Start Of Something New” Duet

How is this funny? The answer is in how the entire scene carries on with the two teenagers’ initial awkwardness, which blossoms into shining confidence (especially within Troy).

The announcer who picks them out of the crowd tells them that they will thank him for this, only to then add, “or not,” as he ditches the two onstage. Now that’s one way to encourage people. However, the funniest part, while scary to watch at first, is when Troy walks closer and closer to Gabriella and accidentally leads her to fall back into the crowd, only for her to be so conveniently lifted back onto the stage by an audience member. Talk about how planned that move was. Still, the entire scene, while sweet and heartwarming, is actually so funny because of how well the actors conveyed the two teens’ primary stage fright.

1 The Main Auditions

Forget about Ryan and Sharpay’s spot-on performance, or Troy and Gabriella’s super-cute, unplanned duet. The general auditions that Ms. Darbus holds turn out to be the most hilarious scene in the entire DCOM!

From the sweet Ryan, who clearly did his hair and picked out a nice suit to audition, to the brilliant yet loud opera singer in the end, the auditions prove to be comical as most tend to be whenever someone miscarries a note. The best part of this scene though is when the two teens decide to get creative and abstract with their audition, only to disgust Ms. Darbus, thus entertaining all fans.
