Do The Sims Actually Live In SimCity

Before The Sims series released in 2000 there was another simulation gaming series made by Maxis co-founder and Sims creator Will Wright called SimCity. SimCity was a series of city builders first released in 1989. Will Wright made three SimCity games before the release of The Sims, which was originally created as a spin-off to the SimCity series. While SimCity deserves more love, The Sims grew to be vastly more popular than the city builder. However, Will Wright’s prior simulation series possibly continues to exist as the primary big city that hosts The Sims series.

In The Sims and The Sims 2, players start the game off by choosing a neighborhood to play in, indicating that the various neighborhoods within the two games are a part of a big city. SimCity is referenced throughout The Sims with examples such as the newspaper from The Sims Bustin’ Out being referred to as SimCity Times, a beach from The Sims: Hot Date expansion called SimCity Beach, and the Old Town neighborhood from The Sims: Unleashed expansion being known as “SimCity’s new historic Old Town district.”

In The Sims 2, the political career track mentions SimCity as the place that the Sims are working for. No matter which neighborhood a player is in, if a Sim joins the political career, the Sim will always be working for SimCity. Though it is a classic Sims rabbit hole location, level 5 of the political career is titled City Council Member and the description says, “Your first elected post, you’ve finally been admitted to SimCity’s inner power circle…” The top of the political career in The Sims 2 has sims become the Mayor of SimCity, which could prove that Sims do indeed live in SimCity. But there are other clues that can support this idea.

The Sims: The Goth Family In SimCity

To further prove that Sims live in the big metropolis of SimCity, one can look at the Goth family, an iconic Sims family that has appeared in all 4 main Sims titles, which confirms The Sims 4 to be in an alternate timeline or universe from its predecessors. The Goth family of The Sims 4 consist of married adults Mortimer and Bella Goth, and their two children: teenager Cassandra and child Alexander. The family lives in one of the best Sims houses, Ophelia Villa in Willow Creek.

The Goth family of The Sims, The Sims 2, and The Sims 3 are quite different. In The Sims 3, the Goth family consists of Gunther Goth, Cornelia Goth, and their child son Mortimer Goth in Sunset Valley. Mortimer is friends with Bella Bachelor. In The Sims, Mortimer Goth is married to Bella Bachelor, who is now Bella Goth and their daughter Cassandra is a child. They live in Neighborhood 1. Mortimer’s parents Gunther and Cornelia return in The Sims: Unleashed expansion pack where they live in a neighborhood called Old Town, which Gunther founded. Old Town becomes Pleasantview in The Sims 2 where an elderly Mortimer lives with his now adult daughter Cassandra and child son Alexander. His wife Bella is missing, having been abducted by aliens and possibly sent to Strangetown, a rural neighborhood in The Sims 2.

The Sims Universe Timeline

Do The Sims Actually Live In SimCity

Like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Sims 1, 2, and 3 are all in the same universe. Chronologically, the timeline within the first three Sims games goes as followed: The Sims 3, The Sims, The Sims 2. Players can see Mortimer Goth’s entire life from Sunset Valley in The Sims 3, Old Town in The Sims, and Pleasantview in The Sims 2 and how things within the world, or, possibly more specifically, SimCity, changes over time. SimCity isn’t directly mentioned in The Sims 3, but it is said that the game’s base world of Sunset Valley is near The Sims 2’s Pleasantview. There are also other Sims from previous games who appear in The Sims 3 with canonical reasons for why they’re there.

The Sims: Don Lothario’s Story

Do The Sims Actually Live In SimCity

It is known that time travel is possible in The Sims. The final expansion pack for The Sims 3 was Into The Future, which allowed players to travel to various future timelines depending on what actions are taken. In Riverview, a world available on The Sims 3 store, the series’ infamous Casanova (not to be confused with the Casanova movie with Natalie Dormer), Don Lothario, finds himself living in a barn. His bio describes him only remembering women laughing at him and waking up in a new place.

This is a reference to the various affairs Don had in The Sims 2. Either Don was tricked into time traveling by all his ex-lovers, or perhaps he was teleported from Pleasantview to Riverview. Riverview also refers to Old Town in the town’s cemetery, which is called Old Town Cemetery. Given that Old Town becomes Pleasantview, it can be assumed that Riverview isn’t too far from the iconic town.

The Sims 2 Easter Eggs and References To Sim City

Besides The Sims, The Sims 2 has a lot of Easter Eggs and references to SimCity that go beyond the political career. There are at least eight paintings within The Sims 2 that reference SimCity. One of them is a painting of Bella Goth, who’s considered to be one of the best characters in The Sims. The painting entitled Bella Squared describes Bella as “One of SimCity’s best-known inhabitants and finest neighbors.” Another décor item is a sports poster titled “SimCity Championship Roster 1984-1985 Season Poster.” The poster’s description points out that the team is a high school football team, perhaps indicating that the school won the local high school championship against all of the other teams within SimCity.

So, do Sims live in SimCity? If one disregards the alternate universe of The Sims 4, the answer could be yes. It makes sense that the general setting from The Sims 1 to The Sims 3 is SimCity. Although the neighborhoods in The Sims 3 are considered “worlds” and some worlds take place during a different timeline, for the most part, it seems like SimCity is the primary home of Sims. Each neighborhood could be better categorized as a town or county within SimCity that has changed and evolved as time has gone by. The Sims 4 may be in an alternate universe, but perhaps The Sims 5 can return to the canon universe and continue the story of the metropolis that Will Wright started long ago.
