Doctor Doom Punishes Human Torch By Giving Him The Things Weakness

Warning: contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #34!

Doctor Doom proves he’s the most diabolical Marvel villain by ruthlessly punishing the Human Torch in a terrifying new manner: giving him the same weakness as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing. The Fantastic Four and Doom have fought many times before, but this time the only person to blame for the hostilities is Johnny Storm, for ruining Doom’s nearly-perfect wedding. In Fantastic Four #34, written by Dan Slott with art by R.B. Silva and colors by Jesus Aburtov, the team (and especially the Human Torch) experiences Doom’s true wrath.

Doctor Doom’s wedding to Lady Victorious was set to be the moment when he made peace with the Fantastic Four once and for all. He even asked Reed Richards to be the best man, an act once unthinkable considering the pair’s history. But Johnny Storm’s past actions ruin what could have been a monumental burying-of-the-hatchet in comic history. At the altar, seconds before vows are said, Lady Victorious interrupts the ceremony and – in full view of the crowd – admits she has “…been intimate…with Johnny Storm.” Everyone in attendance is aghast…except Namor, who laughs hysterically.

Doom is appropriately furious. A massive battle ensues: T’challa, Namor and the Fantastic Four against Doom’s robotic army in the capital of Latveria. Amidst the chaos of the fight, Doom sees Lady Victorious save Johnny Storm’s life from a robot, and is devastated. He subsequently decides death is too good for the Human Torch, and a Latverian device activates, transforming Johnny Storm into a superheated version of his normal flame-covered body. He seemingly has no control over his power – and crucially is unable to extinguish his flames. In Doctor Doom’s own chilling words, “From this day onward you shall be a true human torch.”

Doctor Doom Punishes Human Torch By Giving Him The Things Weakness

In one move, Doctor Doom has granted the Thing’s classic weakness to Johnny. Ever since Fantastic Four #1 was first published in 1961, Ben Grimm was unable to “turn off” his powers like the others, and considered himself an inhuman monster because of it. But Johnny’s fate is arguably worse; the Thing could still interact with people and live his life, but Johnny can’t even come near others without risking their lives. Even Reed Richards doesn’t know how to cure Johnny, and the issue ends with the four flying away from Latveria – Johnny maintaining a safe distance, shouting “I’m not really gonna be like this forever, right!?”

The extent of the fallout from Doom’s ruined wedding remains unknown. Doom is a dictator, and his grip on the Latverian media has ensured that his citizens will think exactly what he wants them to think; the entire country now believes the wedding ceremony was a clever ruse to draw out Doctor Doom’s enemies. But the attendees know the truth, along with the Fantastic Four and Johnny Storm, now permanently a human torch.
