Doctor Strange 2 Has A Mystery Marvel Character Who It Could Be

A mystery Marvel character will make their MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – but who could it be? Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed in December 2019 that the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel will include a character Marvel has always wanted to use. The only clues offered by Feige is that he or she is someone audiences won’t be expecting.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange 2 is already bringing in one surprising character, but it’s one that already exists in the MCU: Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Based on the title of the highly-anticipated sequel, which has been delayed to 2022, the movie is likely to encompass several different dimensions and timelines, making it possible for Marvel to incorporate a wide variety of major and obscure heroes and villains. But who is this mystery character mentioned by Kevin Feige? As noted, there are multiple options, but fortunately Feige’s comments have narrowed it down, at least by a bit.

Since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was confirmed to be in development, numerous characters have been rumored and speculated about, but many of these don’t fit the criteria for the film’s guest character. Doctor Strange’s primary love interest Clea and fellow sorcerer Brother Voodoo are both reportedly appearing, but neither of them would be unexpected. America Chavez is rumored as well, but as a relatively new hero, she doesn’t seem like someone Marvel would have had a long-term interest in. Who else could the mystery character be?

Doctor Doom

Victor von Doom is a character Marvel surely intends to use at some point, with the expectation being that Marvel will save him for its Fantastic Four reboot (which was confirmed at SDCC 2019). Instead, Marvel could bring him into the fold a bit early by featuring him in Doctor Strange 2. Doctor Doom’s inclusion would make sense, considering that he has a lot of ties to both Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch in the comics. Doom is one of Marvel’s brightest minds, but he also shares an interest in the magical arts. His use of magic has brought him into conflict with the Sorcerer Supreme in the past.

Scarlet Witch has also been known to attract Doom’s attention. Doom is aware of Wanda’s untapped potential and he once tried to use her to make himself more powerful. In a separate story, his machinations led to the destruction of the Avengers at the hands of a crazed Scarlet Witch. There are theories that Marvel could go down this road with Wanda in Doctor Strange 2, since it’s been said that she’ll soon become more like the hero from the comics. The Latverian dictator could have something to do with that. This could be the first step to turning Doctor Doom into the MCU’s next big villain.

Captain Britain

Fans have wondered for years if and when Marvel will get around to introducing its biggest British hero, Captain Britain aka Brian Braddock. The closest Marvel has come to using him was a line in Avengers: Endgame that mentioned an agent named Braddock, which may or may not be his father. Doctor Strange 2 could go a step further by officially introducing him, but how would Captain Britain fit into the MCU? He and Strange don’t have that much to do with each other in the comics, but the kind of world he lives in feels like it belongs in Doctor Strange 2.

Doctor Strange 2: Every Theory About What Starts The Multiverse of Madness

Captain Britain’s headquarters is a magical dimension called Otherworld, which resembles Britain during the Arthurian era. It’s a world filled with sorcerers, elves, and mystical creatures. Otherworld is actually a nexus point for endless alternate realities, each of which is represented by their own version of Captain Britain. Given the nature of Otherworld, it would be a fascinating place for Strange to visit in in the sequel. While there, he could come across Captain Britain, who may have experiences of his own when it comes to traveling to different timelines. Doctor Strange 2 could be the first of several MCU appearances for Captain Britain. Marvel may not give him his own film, but he could work as a fun team-up character in future MCU installments.

Kang the Conqueror

As noted, Doctor Doom is a strong candidate to be the MCU’s next major villain after Thanos, but then, so is Kang the Conqueror, a time-traveling descendant of Reed Richards equipped with an arsenal of futuristic weaponry. Kang got his start as a Fantastic Four villain but evolved into one of the Avengers’ greatest enemies. Kang has potentially visited more timelines than any other Marvel Comics character. Kang’s ability to travel to different periods in human history has resulted in some of the Avengers’ most exciting adventures. A story that has Kang acting as the main antagonist feels like it could be the right story for Marvel to do in a possible Avengers 5, especially since the concept of time travel has now been integrated into the MCU. Kang’s exploits in the MCU could get Strange’s attention in The Multiverse of Madness, and be addressed in a more meaningful way in a later movie.

Galactus

The world-devouring Galactus and the cosmic entity that gave Silver Surfer his powers is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Now that Marvel has the rights to the Fantastic Four and the X-Men back, there’s a chance movies in Phase 4 could include cameos from some of these previously off-limits characters, Galactus being one of them. Galactus, with all his power, has factored heavily in some of Marvel’s biggest stories, including Infinity Gauntlet. It’s likely that he’ll be utilized in a similar way once he gets into the MCU by making appearances in large-scale Marvel movies. He’s usually an antagonist, but his importance goes much deeper than just being a villain. By consuming the lifeforce of planets to satiate his cosmic appetite, Galactus maintains the balance of the universe. The role that he fulfills in the MCU could be introduced (and explained) in Doctor Strange 2. Strange could travel to a timeline where Galactus has drained the Earth of its energy. Doctor Strange is one of the few characters capable of reasoning with or outsmarting Galactus without being backed up by a team of heroes.

Namor the Sub-Mariner

When Scott Derrickson was still expected to direct Doctor Strange 2, he tweeted an image of Namor and deleted it. This could mean nothing on its own, but the confirmation of a major guest character adds fuel to the rumors that the Avenging Son is finally joining the MCU. Black Panther 2 would be the more obvious choice for Namor, but he could also work in Doctor Strange 2. Namor is one of Strange’s biggest allies in the comics, as the pair are two of three founding members of the Defenders (the third being the Hulk). Namor’s kingdom of Atlantis is also the home of various magical artifacts which Strange could need for whatever problem he’s dealing with in the film. The events of Doctor Strange 2 could lead to a team-up between the two characters. If such a scenario occurred, it could help Marvel build toward a more traditional Defenders line-up in the MCU.
