Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed on Twitter that he is open to returning to the MCU for a future movie when asked by a fan. The director helmed Marvel’s Sorceror Supreme’s big-screen debut, with the Phase 3 film releasing on November 4th, 2016. Derrickson’s mystical MCU adventure starred Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character, alongside Chiwetel Eijofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelson, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams.

Before working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Derrickson built up his career through horror, directing films such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver Us From Evil. Derrickson’s involvement was first reported in June 2014, before being confirmed shortly after that he and Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill would bring Stephen Strange to life. Starring Cumberbatch, the film saw the former surgeon learn to be a master of the mystic arts. Derrickson was set to return to direct the sequel, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, but Derrickson exited the sequel due to creative differences with the studio. Still, despite previously parting ways, the director is open to returning to the MCU.

Derrickson shared his openness to return in a reply to a fan on his personal Twitter account. Following the director discussing the roll out of the IMAX versions of various Marvel movies on Disney+, including Doctor Strange, Derrickson was praised by a fan, who later asked if the director would return to the MCU following his departure. Though he didn’t confirm anything at the time of writing, the director did leave things open, telling the fan, “You never know”. Check out Derrickson’s original response below.

Following his departure from Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi confirmed he would be helming the sequel. Derrickson has expressed his support for Raimi, stating the director was one of the nicest people he had worked with, while praising him as a perfect choice to take over Strange’s next journey into mystery. Derrickson has also expressed support for other Marvel productions, hyping up WandaVision prior to its release. Derrickson also revealed he had seen an early cut of the fourth Marvel What If…? episode, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” and thought that it was terrific.

Derrickson’s further interest in returning to the MCU and continued support is a welcome sight, showing that despite the director coming at odds with the studio, he is supportive of his fellow Marvel creatives’ work. Derrickson is currently working on The Black Phone and a first-look television agreement with Blumhouse, as well as being revealed to be working on a sequel to Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. Though he is currently busy for the foreseeable future, many would likely be welcome to see his approach to the MCU once more after his work on Doctor Strange.
