A new toy for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness confirms Stephen gets a new costume in the sequel. Originally, director Scott Derrickson was supposed to helm the sequel but exited the project in January 2020 due to creative differences with Marvel. Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi was later hired to direct Strange’s second solo film, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong all returning.

Like most Marvel movies, specific plot details are being held tightly under wraps. However, casting announcements in the past year have hinted at possible story details. Elizabeth Olsen is confirmed to have a significant role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, meaning the WandaVision season 1 cliffhanger will likely be explained with the Avenger searching for her sons Tommy and Billy. Xochitl Gomez has also been cast as America Chavez, who is part of the Young Avengers in Marvel comics. Rumors about the film’s story have been swirling ever since the subtitle Multiverse of Madness was announced, and new merch reveals have now given fans more insight into the sequel.

A Target exclusive Marvel Legends figure has revealed Stephen Strange will get a new costume in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The outfit is completely different than what has been seen in previous MCU movies, giving the hero a black and red suit. The figure is called “Defender Strange” and also comes with a Sling Ring Portal accessory. Pre-orders are currently open for the Marvel Legends figure for $31.49.

This figure is one of the many Marvel Legends figures revealed for the sequel. These toys also provided the first look at Mordo’s design in the sequel, giving the character a new costume and long hair. America Chavez is also included in the first wave of figures, along with new figures of Wong and Doctor Strange, both in his regular and Astral forms. While Sleepwalker and D’Spayre aren’t advertised as MCU characters, the figures will need to be collected to complete the Rintrah Build-A-Figure.

Toys and other merch are always a big part of MCU movie releases; however, they often spoil key details for the film. With this figure being called “Defender Strange” and the film delving into the Multiverse, it’s extremely possible that this could be a Doctor Strange Variant. A plot detail this big likely won’t be confirmed until the first trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is released, but this could be one explanation for the new costume. On the other hand, superhero movies usually give characters updated designs to sell more toys, which would be a much less exciting reason for the Avenger getting a new costume.
