Doctor Who Claire Secretly Connects To Eleven & Clara Theory Explained

In Doctor Who season 13 episode 1, the Doctor and her companion Yaz met a mysterious woman named Claire (Annabel Scholey) who claimed to know both time travelers and hinted at her larger connection to the Eleventh Doctor and his companion, Clara. Their brief encounter has led to much speculation surrounding Claire and her enigmatic identity. Claire also piqued the Doctor’s interest with her mention that she was “taking the long way home,” a phrase repeated several times over the course of the series, most notably by the Eleventh Doctor and Clara.

Meeting by chance on an evening walk, Claire repeated this memorable phrase back to the Doctor, who no doubt recalled her own usage of the phrase in her Eleventh and Twelfth regenerations (Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, respectively). Claire seemed to sense that this phrase was significant as well, and perhaps an eerie portent of things to come. Shortly after their encounter, Claire was hunted by one of Doctor Who’s most iconic aliens: a Weeping Angel, a quantum-locked species that feeds off the time energy of others by transporting them decades into the past. When the Angel began to follow her, Claire knew what it was capable of, and knew how to protect herself. Unfortunately, Claire was unsuccessful and was sent back into the past.

Between Claire’s mention of “taking the long way home,” and her knowledge of the Weeping Angels, many theories have surfaced suggesting that Claire could potentially be Clara. Or, at least, Claire could be a different version of Clara. Additionally, with Jodie Whitaker’s reign as the Doctor coming to an end, it has also been theorized that Claire may be the next regeneration of the Doctor, and could be assuming the role by the end of season 13’s apocalyptic Flux.

Similarly to Claire, Clara Oswald, a companion of both the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, not only had experience with Weeping Angels, but once explained that she would meet her end on Gallifrey (the Doctor’s home planet), and said she would take “the long way around,” back to the planet after commandeering a stolen TARDIS. Undoubtedly, their phrasing was similar, and Claire and Clara do share a resemblance, both with their names and in appearance. Alternatively, like in past seasons of Doctor Who, Claire could be one of Clara’s echoes or splinters, alternate versions of Clara Oswald sprinkled throughout the universe in the Doctor’s personal timeline.

It’s also possible that Claire could become the next regeneration of the Doctor. In the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor,” the Eleventh Doctor vows to seek out Galifrey after it is sequestered into a pocket dimension. “Home,” is where he’s going, “the long way around.” Additionally, when fulfilling this promise to return home in his Twelfth regeneration, the Doctor identified himself by sending a young boy into the capitol of Gallifrey with the message that he’s come, “the long way around.” With Clara having once taken up the title of Doctor as well, there’s a long-standing pattern of having Doctors utter a version of this phrase. This highlights a clear link between Claire and the character of The Doctor.
