The serialized nature of Doctor Who: Flux means it has an unusually large cast of recurring characters. The coronavirus pandemic has forced showrunner Chris Chibnall to change the format of Doctor Who for season 13. “Doctor Who is one of the most difficult shows to produce,” he explained in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, “and we were aware that [the pandemic] would make it even more difficult. We’ve tried to keep pushing the show every year, and we didn’t want to let the ambition of the show down. But to continue with the previous number of episodes was financially, logistically, and operationally impossible.”
As a result, Doctor Who season 13 has been shortened to just six episodes in length. What’s more, there is a single overarching story, helping the production team to bubble more effectively because actors can recur. The decision to change the show may have been made for practical effect, but it’s proving to be an inspired one, playing to Chibnall’s strengths and meaning the story is building momentum through creative use of cliffhangers in Doctor Who season 13. It’s also meaning viewers have more time to become familiar with key characters, while storylines can be set up in one episode before being picked up later on.
Naturally, that means this time Doctor Who has an unusually large cast of recurring characters – more than at any time since the show’s relaunch in 2005. Here’s all you need to know about Doctor Who: Flux’s cast.
Jodie Whittaker is the Thirteenth Doctor
Leading Doctor Who: Flux’s cast as the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker is ending her tenure on the show. Season 13 will be Whittaker’s final full series, with three specials set to air next year that conclude her story. The Timeless Child retcon seems to have given the Doctor a sharper edge, and she’s determined to discover the truth about her forgotten past – but she looks set to do it the hard way, with forgotten demons haunting the Doctor’s present. This places the Doctor in the unenviable position of having to deal with enemies who know exactly how she operates, even though she has no idea who they are or what they’re doing. Outside of Doctor Who, Whittaker is best known for playing Beth Latimer on Broadchurch.
Mandip Gill is Yaz
Another of Doctor Who: Flux’s returning cast, Mandip Gill’s Yaz has been traveling along with the Doctor for quite some time when Doctor Who: Flux begins. This means Yaz has become a much more seasoned adventurer, guided throughout by asking herself the simple question: “What Would The Doctor Do?” The relationship between Yaz and the Doctor seems to have become a little more strained, however, because she senses the Doctor is keeping secrets from her – and appears to deeply resent this. Prior to Doctor Who, Gill starred in over 200 episodes of Hollyoaks.
John Bishop is Dan
Played by comedian John Bishop, new companion Dan Lewis is the biggest addition to Doctor Who: Flux’s cast. Dan’s Liverpudlian who is plunged into universal chaos when he’s targeted by an alien named Karvanista, and winds up traveling in the TARDIS as a result. Kind-hearted and resourceful, Dan adapts at speed to the madness he’s now caught up in; he may not fully understand what’s going on, but he’s clearly decided he has no choice but to ride it out. The BBC is being remarkably secretive about Dan’s background, suggesting his past will be revealed over the course of Doctor Who season 13.
Jacob Anderson is Vinder
Jacob Anderson, best known as Grey Worm on Game of Thrones, has always loved Doctor Who, and for him appearing in the cast of the British science-fiction TV series is even bigger than Thrones. He plays a mysterious character called Vinder, introduced as the commander of an observation station in deep space that’s disrupted by a cosmic event called the Flux. Transported through time and space after watching entire star systems destroyed by the Flux, he allies with the Doctor and her friends.
Sam Spruell is Swarm & Rochenda Sandall Is Azure
Best known for Snow White & the Huntsman, Legend, and Taken 3, Sam Spruell is part of Doctor Who: Flux’s cast as the main villain – an enigmatic being called Swarm, who fought the Doctor long ago and has escaped imprisonment to wreak havoc on the universe once again. Swarm is a powerful being whose powers seem like a homage to the MCU’s Thanos, and he’s assembled an entourage around him, most notably Rochenda Sandall (Small Axe, Line of Duty)’s Azure, who seems to share his powers.
Craige Els is Karvanista
Viewers can be forgiven for not recognizing Liverpudlian actor Craige Els (Ripper Street, Bletchley Circle, Coronation Street) among Doctor Who season 13’s cast- let’s face it, he’s not exactly easily identifiable in the show. Els plays the part of Karvanista, introduced as a former Division operative who the Doctor hopes can tell her about her forgotten past. The Doctor’s pursuit of Karvanista essentially kicks off the story of Doctor Who season 13, when the Doctor comes to believe he is leading an invasion of Earth.
Annabel Scholey is Claire
Best known for her appearances in Walking on Sunshine and Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part II, Annabel Scholey plays a mystery character called Claire in Doctor Who, and she seems to have a history with the Doctor – and who soon falls foul of the Weeping Angels. Dialogue in Doctor Who season 13, episode 1 suggests Claire has met the Doctor out of sequence, meaning this character is one who is sure to return – and whose story will be more than a little timey-wimey.
Nadia Albina is Diane
British actress Nadia Albina is known for roles in Beautiful People, Coronation Street, Marcella, and Innocent. In Doctor Who: Flux, she plays Diane, a love interest for Dan who is targeted by Azure for unknown reasons. She only makes a brief appearance among Doctor Who season 13, episode 1’s cast, but her return is clearly set up.
Steve Oram is Joseph Williamson
An actual figure from history, philanthropist Joseph Williamson is best known for constructing a series of tunnels in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool, whose purpose is still uncertain to this day. It seems that, in Doctor Who lore, the creation of the Williamson Tunnels will somehow be tied to the events of Doctor Who season 13 and the Flux, with Williamson serving as an unlikely prophet. He’s played by Steve Oram (Good Omens, The End of the F****** World, Code 404).
