Doctor Who Flux The 10 Best Characters Ranked

Doctor Who’s latest season Flux has reached its conclusion with many long-term plot points being resolved and others being left over to hopefully be picked up again in next year’s specials. The season sees The Thirteenth Doctor and her companion, Yaz return for another adventure, and both characters are arguably at their strongest here.

During the Chibnall era of the show, recurring characters have been few and far between, so it’s refreshing to see several memorable players introduced in this season. Outside of the two returning mainstays, the season introduces a new companion and new villains, as well as featuring the return of many iconic monsters as well as fan favorite character, Kate Stewart.

10 The Grand Serpent

While his inclusion in the season doesn’t really add much and takes screen time away from other more prominent storylines, Craig Parkinson’s performance ensures that this is still a memorable character. After a cameo in the third episode, The Grand Serpent plays a large role in the final two episodes.

His masterful infiltration of UNIT and the way in which he dispatches his victims is unique and visually exciting. Due to his open-ended conclusion, the character would be a perfect returning villain for one of the specials, as he unfortunately serves little purpose in Flux and is lost within the plethora of other storylines. The character’s scenes with Kate Stewart are particularly engaging and it would be great to see a full-on standoff between the two at a later point.

9 Kate Stewart

So far in the Chibnall era, connections to previous eras have been sparing, but Flux features the long-anticipated return of UNIT leader Kate Stewart. After last appearing back in season 9, it’s certainly exciting to see Kate back in the show.

Her previous appearances have shown she is one of the best supporting characters in Doctor Who, but after so long away she deserves a much larger part in the story than she actually gets. Unfortunately, Kate is pushed into the background and becomes lost within an overstuffed final episode. Despite this, the history of the character and Jemma Redgrave’s excellent performance are sure to elevate any fan’s enjoyment of this season.

8 Azure

Swarm’s sister and partner in crime Azure plays a large role as one of the main villains in the season. The character is menacing and the performance is deliciously campy in the best Doctor Who way. Although she is given a strong focus in the first few episodes, she does fall to the wayside in the second half of the season and her motivations are never fully explored.

It is disappointing that her backstory is never explained and a satisfying answer is never given as to why she is living as a human in the Arctic at the start of the season. That being said, Azure is certainly one of the most memorable villains of the Chibnall era, which ensures she won’t be one of the Doctor Who monsters fans forget about.

7 Dan Lewis

Doctor Who Flux The 10 Best Characters Ranked

Dan is the latest recruit of the TARDIS and seems to take the chaos in stride. With so much going on in this season, it doesn’t feel like the best time to introduce a brand new companion, and Dan is given very little screen time in the second half. Much like with Yaz, he doesn’t seem to change from his three years trapped in the past and doesn’t mention his family despite them being introduced earlier.

Dan does provide some great comic relief, has a great dynamic with Yaz, and is a much more grounded companion in the same vein as Donna Noble was. Unfortunately though, he is given little chance to develop, and despite being a new companion he barely interacts with The Doctor. However, hopefully their relationship can be given more focus in the upcoming specials.

6 Claire Brown

Doctor Who Flux The 10 Best Characters Ranked

When Claire is introduced in the first episode of the season, viewers are preparing themselves for a River Song-esque story, as she knows The Doctor but The Doctor hasn’t met her yet. In her initial scenes, Claire is very familiar with The Doctor and the rules surrounding the Weeping Angels. The later explanation that Claire has only had visions of The Doctor before this meeting doesn’t quite ring true with how familiar she is with her though.

That being said, the character is both intriguing and likable, largely due to the actress’ great performance in the role. Also, her bond with Jericho is heartwarming and it would have been great to see more of it throughout the season.

5 The Thirteenth Doctor

Doctor Who Flux The 10 Best Characters Ranked

The Thirteenth Doctor is certainly one of the more divisive incarnations of the Time Lord, and while Jodie Whittaker always does the best with what she’s given, the character is often sidelined by the guest cast or reduced to delivering heavy-handed exposition. Even with the season largely focusing on The Doctor’s missing memories and hidden past, there is so much going on that she does sometimes fade into the background.

That being said, her confrontations with some of the villains such as Swarm, The Grand Serpent, and the Sontarans are captivating to watch, and The Doctor is really given the chance to shine. It is also great to see new aspects of her relationship with Yaz; the audience is able to see the strength of their bond as well as a reluctance from Thirteen to open up to her companion.

4 Yasmin Khan

Despite this being Yaz’s third season on the show, she still feels quite underdeveloped at the beginning of Flux. Compared to some other companions like Donna and Bill who only traveled for one season, she’s never been given a massive focus bar the odd episode.

While this season doesn’t massively develop her character, not having to fight for screen time with Graham and Ryan certainly helps her. When The Doctor is secretive and evasive with her she is not afraid to question it, and when she is stuck in the past with Dan and Jericho she shows how effective she can be at taking charge. Although very little is done with the plot thread of her being stuck in the past for three years (did she not miss her family?), the audience is able to see a much more assertive and self-assured side to the character here.

3 Karvanista

One of the new characters introduced in the season is the Lupari, Karvanista. The Lupari are a species bonded with humans, and Karvanista is reluctantly paired with Dan. Right from the off, Dan and his Lupar have great onscreen chemistry and banter that continues throughout.

The idea of the Lupari and their bond with humans is fun due to their resemblance to man’s best friend; but, it does bring into question where they’ve been all the other times the Earth has been in danger. Karvanista’s pain at losing the rest of his species in the finale is heartbreaking to watch and throughout the season, he is able to take his place among the most adorable and weirdest aliens from New Who.

2 Swarm

Doctor Who Flux The 10 Best Characters Ranked

New villain and main antagonist of the season, Swarm is a captivating addition to the show. While the Chibnall era excels when reintroducing previous villains, it struggles when introducing new ones, with most offerings being forgettable or distractingly similar to older monsters. Swarm provides a welcome change though; he is threatening and menacing from the get-go and the performance is outstanding.

In the second half of the season, he is unfortunately sidelined for less interesting and less developed plot points. Also, he is defeated far too easily at the end of the season considering the huge threat he poses. But ultimately, he is certainly one of the best new villains of the Chibnall era, and even the design of the character is impeccable.

1 Eustacius Jericho

Despite only showing up midway through the season, Professor Jericho fast becomes one of the best guest characters from this era. Right from his first episode, he stands up to one of the most intimidating and best monsters from Doctor Who, The Weeping Angels. Although he is clearly perplexed by what is going on around him, he quickly adapts and bravely takes on The Weeping Angels like no one else before him.

Towards the end of the season, Jericho forms an exciting trio with Yaz, and Dan and it feels as if he may become part of the TARDIS team too. Unfortunately, this isn’t to be, as he is sadly killed in the final episode. But he certainly leaves a lasting impression on the audience even in his short time on the show.
