Does Godzilla King of the Monsters Have A PostCredits Scene

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the third movie in the MonsterVerse, but does it feature a post-credits scene? Warner Bros. and Legendary’s monster universe kicked off in 2014 with Gareth Edward’s Godzilla reboot. Following the film’s success (critical and commercial alike), the studios decided to add King Kong to the mix with Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ 70s adventure, Kong: Skull Island. Now comes King of the Monsters, a direct sequel to Edwards’ movie that was co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty (of Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus fame).

Picking up five years after Edwards’ Godzilla (so real-time, in other words), the sequel pits Godzilla against him arch-nemesis, King Ghidorah, in a battle to rule over the other kaiju or Titans of the MonsterVerse. King of the Monsters also introduces classic monsters like Mothra and Rodan to the franchise, and sets the stage for next year’s already in-production crossover, Godzilla vs. Kong. No doubt, fans are curious to learn how the film lays the groundwork for even more kaiju blockbusters to come, once the dust’s settled from Godzilla and Ghidorah’s throw-down.

More than that, audiences are surely wondering if they should stick around for King of the Monsters’ credits, in case there’s an extra scene or easter eggs. King of the Monsters does, in fact, have a post-credits scene, in addition to a whole lot of details (presented over the start of the credits as newspaper headlines) about the MonsterVerse’s future. Obviously, it’s always good to sit through a film’s end credits anyway, as a show of appreciation for the many, many people who helped make it happen. In this case, however, viewers will also be rewarded for their patience with a little something extra.

All things considered, it makes sense that King of the Monsters includes a credits scene. Post-credits stingers are increasingly common in franchise movies these days, especially when it comes to cinematic universes like the MCU, DCEU, and MonsterVerse. Indeed, Kong: Skull Island included a post-credits scene that directly foreshadowed King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra’s introduction in King of the Monsters two years ago. And while that wasn’t the case with 2014’s Godzilla, that’s because the reboot wasn’t explicitly designed to jump-start a whole new series of giant monster films.

It’s also worth noting that King of the Monsters’ credits material potentially sets up films beyond Godzilla vs. Kong (which everybody already knew was coming, anyway). WB and Legendary surely want to keep the MonsterVerse going after Godzilla and King Kong duke it out and/or eventually join forces next year, and have clearly started looking ahead to what comes after, whether it’s Godzilla 3 or something else kaiju-related. That’s all the more reason for those invested in this franchise to wait around until the credits are completely done rolling on the Godzilla sequel.
