Does The Google Pixel 6 Need A Screen Protector

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are two of the most impressive phones Google has ever created — but are their displays strong enough to survive without a screen protector? Durability is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a new smartphone. Whether it’s checking the water-resistance rating, glass quality used for the display, or any available drop protection, certain phones are more rugged than others. Most devices these days are strong enough to withstand some rough use, but there are still winners and losers in this regard.

When it comes to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Google’s hyping up the devices in more ways than one. Want a great camera system? Google claims it has the best on the market. Need powerful performance and long battery life? The new Google Tensor chip is supposed to deliver both of those things. Google nailed almost all of these aspects (and more) on both phones, but there’s one thing the company isn’t talking too much about. When it comes to durability — specifically, the Pixel 6’s screen — Google delivered the goods.

Whether someone buys the regular Pixel 6 or the more expensive Pixel 6 Pro, both have Corning Gorilla Glass Victus covering the display. Victus is the current best smartphone glass Corning has to offer. It’s rated to have excellent protection against drops and scratches, and it’s among the very best glass you can find on a smartphone today (perhaps only second to Ceramic Shield on the newest iPhones). Using a screen protector is always a good idea no matter what phone someone has, but having Gorilla Glass Victus on the Pixel 6 means the out-of-the-box protection is about as good as it gets.

The Pixel 6’s Glass Is Among The Strongest Available

Reading through Corning’s website, the claims behind Gorilla Glass Victus are pretty impressive. Corning says it’s the “toughest Gorilla Glass yet” and features “significant improvement in both drop and scratch performance” compared to older Gorilla Glass versions. More specifically, Victus is rated to survive drops up to 2 meters high onto hard and rough surfaces. Corning’s testing also shows that Victus withstands scratches up to 4x better than before. Corning has been the leader in smartphone glass for years now, and it’s safe to say that Victus is its best iteration of Gorilla Glass yet.

At the end of the day, however, glass is still glass. There’s no doubt that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have very durable screens, but that’s not to say they’re indestructible. That’s why we still recommend using a screen protector if you’re worried about the Pixel’s long-term durability. Replacing a scratched or shattered screen protector is easy. Getting a shattered phone display repaired is a bit more complicated — and more expensive. Gorilla Glass Victus is an excellent layer of protection to have on the Pixel 6 models, but with a trusty screen protector on top of it, it’s made that much better.
