Nearly four years since the original release of Doki Doki Literature Club (DDLC), an expanded version called Doki Doki Literature Club Plus will be arriving on consoles and will include new side stories and art. Doki Doki Literature Club has been regarded as one of the most unique and terrifying visual novel games to date.

Despite its cute aesthetic, Doki Doki Literature Club is well known for its horror aspects. The game’s story confronts what it means for these characters to be inside a video game, and has many moments that have freaked out many a player. Doki Doki Literature Club has gotten so popular that many mods of the game have been made by dedicated fans, one of the most well-known being Monika After Story.

IGN’s Summer of Gaming revealed Doki Doki Literature Club Plus, an expanded console release of the original game. It will include six new side stories featuring each of the characters. According to Dan Salvato, these stories are set outside the timeline of the original game and will show how the characters became close friends. The expansion will also include a music player featuring 13 new songs, 100+ unlockable images, and improved HD visuals to the game. The game will release June 30th for PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. A physical edition will also be released that will come with various goodies such as character standers. The digital version of the game will cost $15, while the physical will cost $30.

Having DDLC be ported over to consoles brings up questions on how some of the game’s memorable scenes will be treated, seeing how they’re meant to be played on a PC. Dan Salvato also tweeted last year that he was planning to release more content for Doki Doki Literature Club in the future. It’s probable that this is the content that he was referring to back then. Salvato also mentioned that he had another original visual novel in the works back then, showing that he still has more projects in the work besides DDLC.

It remains to be seen whether this next visual novel will be similar to DDLC, but given that DDLC is known for subverting tropes, it wouldn’t be surprising if this had a similar concept in mind. In the meantime, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus will give more insight into these characters through the side stories. While it has been some time since the original game released, this new expansion of Doki Doki Literature Club will likely revive the game and help expose new audiences when it releases on June 30th.
