Netflix unveils the first teaser trailer for Don’t Look Up finding Meryl Streep’s President uninterested by the impending apocalypse. Written and directed by Oscar winner Adam McKay, the sci-fi black comedy centers on two low-level astronomers as they must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that could destroy planet Earth. The film features an ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Cate Blanchett, Streep and Chris Evans.
Development on the film was first announced in late 2019 when Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to the project, reuniting the studio with McKay after his Oscar-winning work on The Big Short. However, Netflix would pick up the film a few months later and casting would get underway with Lawrence joining right away, with McKay having written her character specifically for the actress. Following a delay in production due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, filming wrapped on Don’t Look Up in February and Netflix is now looking to build anticipation for the film ahead of its December release.
With just three months remaining until its arrival, Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Don’t Look Up. The video offers a look at the darkly humorous approach to its impending apocalypse and Streep’s President of the United States bored by the warnings. Check out the funny teaser trailer below:

After making a name for himself with Will Ferrell-fronted comedies through the aughts, McKay shook up expectations from critics and audiences alike with the political indictment comedy The Big Short and subsequently with the Oscar-nominated dark comedy biopic of Dick Cheney, Vice. The first trailer for Don’t Look Up certainly looks to continue McKay’s winning streak, offering DiCaprio another chance to display his comedic chops akin to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Wolf of Wall Street as much as his dramatic persona. It also looks to blend McKay’s signature dark humor and political satire with a matter as serious as a world-ending comet crashing into the planet.
The first teaser for Don’t Look Up also offers a better look at the wide range of stars McKay has assembled for the film, namely Streep as the uninterested President ignoring DiCaprio and Lawrence’s warnings. McKay has been a major supporter of Bernie Sanders in the last two Presidential elections, pointing towards his creation of Streep’s President and her outlandish son portrayed by Hill taking major inspiration from the Trump family and their time in the White House. With the film set for a December 24 release, it will be interesting to see if it reaches the same level of acclaim as McKay’s recent efforts and draw the awards buzz for the season.
