DOOM Eternal Horde Mode Looks Difficult As Hell In Teaser [UPDATED]

Update (10/26/2021 5:05 PM EDT): The DOOM Eternal Update 6.66 patch notes are live on Bethesda’s official website, fully detailing the game’s Horde Mode, two new Master Levels, Battlemode 2.0, and more. The original story continues below.

A quick teaser trailer for the DOOM Eternal Horde Mode has gone live online, with a late October release date attached. Developer id Software originally teased the Horde Mode for DOOM Eternal over the summer, announcing the content as a replacement for the shooter’s previously promised single-player Invasion Mode.

The single-player Invasion offering was unveiled years ago during QuakeCon 2018, with the intention of it launching alongside the core experience on day one. Id Software revised these release plans, however, delaying Invasion Mode to an unspecified date as a free post-launch update. Notably, it would’ve introduced multiplayer components to the sequel’s single-player campaign, effectively allowing users to invade the games of others in an attempt to defeat them as demons. In July of this year, Invasion fell to the cutting room floor; DOOM Eternal’s Horde Mode took its place. Very soon, id will have something to show for such a decision.

Today, October 21, publisher Bethesda Softworks uploaded a nearly 30-second tease trailer for Horde Mode’s imminent arrival in DOOM Eternal. The mode is so imminent, in fact, that it’s scheduled to go live next week on Tuesday, October 26, according to the tail end of the video. Id Software plans to share more details about the new content tonight at 7:30 PM ET in a Twitch stream on the official Bethesda channel. Game Director Hugo Martin and Senior Community Manager Joshua Boyle will host the show.

The arcade-style Horde Mode will release alongside DOOM Eternal Update 6.66, which should also feature BATTLEMODE 2.0, and two additional Master Levels. With BATTLEMODE, in particular, players can look forward to improved matchmaking, streak-based rewards, and a brand-new arena.

Id Software’s ongoing support for DOOM Eternal is nothing short of impressive. Since its launch in March 2020, the acclaimed first-person shooter has received free content updates and paid DLC, the latter of which launched across two installments – The Ancient Gods Part One and The Ancient God Part Two. Better yet, PS5 and Xbox Series X owners were treated to a free upgrade in late June that boasted enhanced visuals, ray-tracing support, and performance modes allowing DOOM Eternal to run 120fps or in 4K at 60 frames per second.
