Doomsday Clock Confirms Superman is The Center of DC Comics

The Doomsday Clock series may have started as a sequel to Watchmen, but its lasting impact is reaffirming Superman’s place at the center of the DC Comics Universe, as the one hero around which all of reality takes shape.

Doomsday Clock’s finale provided many answers to questions teased since 2016. Most of all, the confrontation between Superman and Doctor Manhattan has been heavily hyped by DC as the culminating moment of its Rebirth era. While not what fans expected, Geoff Johns and Gary Frank crafted a magnificent story that served as a love letter to DC Comics’ rich history. From the return of the Justice Society, the Legion of Superheroes, and the nature of Superman to the universe, Doomsday Clock attempted to solve it all. Chiefly among those questions was the notion of the “The Superman Theory.”

Throughout Doomsday Clock, Doctor Manhattan pondered just what Superman’s place really is in the fabric of DC’s multiverse. The world of Watchmen is quite different from the world of DC, after all. Following the events of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ original comic, Manhattan finds himself in the DC multiverse, watching each and every timeline unfold from the arrival of Superman in Action Comics #1, all the way through the current timeline. Manhattan once again confesses being partly responsible for the creation of the New-52, but explains it was meant to test Superman’s impact on the DC multiverse, which was then revealed to be the ‘metaverse,’ with Superman at the center of it all.

Doctor Manhattan and Superman’s fight ended up not being a battle of strength, but one of the soul. The two represent polar opposites of absolute power in their respective universes. The entire concept of Doctor Manhattan is partly a critique of Superman’s character at the time as well, so the two characters share much in common. Manhattan foresaw either Superman destroying him, or himself destroying the universe. And at the pivotal moment that comes to define both characters, Manhattan tells Superman he was responsible for the death of his parents. Closing his eyes and accepting whatever fate comes, yet almost certain that Superman is going to attack him, the Man of Steel instead protects him from an incoming threat. This is the moment that gives Doctor Manhattan a feeling he was devoid of throughout his life: hope. Understanding Superman’s place at last, Manhattan redefines the DC Universe completely, putting 80 years of stories into context.

Manhattan realizes that Superman is the key to the metaverse, the one constant and the one hope that ties it all together. Yet, he also realizes the changes he must make to set the universe right from all the changes he made, which led to the New-52. He gives Superman Jonathan and Martha Kent back. He did this by reestablishing the Justice Society of America, by making sure Alan Scott becomes a Green Lantern. The Justice Society of America that, in turn, inspired a teenage Clark Kent to become a superhero many years before he was actually meant to, donning the moniker of Superboy and saving his parents from the car crash that originally killed them. This action had a ripple effect on the DC Metaverse, bringing the Legion of Super-Heroes from the 31st century back into existence. These heroes then arrived to save Superman from the army of enemies intent on killing him in the issue.

The final revelation of Manhattan truly puts Superman’s importance to the DC Universe into full focus. Manhattan looks back at each every version of Superman throughout time. From the Golden Age to the Silver Age, Post-Crisis, the New 52, the multiple future reboots, Superman is the constant. He takes a peek behind the hood of what makes DC Comics what it is and Superman’s symbol is at the heart of it. Superman drives the DC Metaverse. Manhattan comes to the conclusion that no matter how many times the timeline shifts and baby Kal-El lands a generation later, the truth of the DC Universe does not change. Geoff Johns seems to speak through Doctor Manhattan at this point, almost telling readers that no matter how many reboots, retcons, timelines, or multiple Earths the DC Universe evolves through, at the core, these characters will remain the same… just as long as Superman is preserved and cherished as a character.

In Doomsday Clock, Superman not only saves his own Metaverse, but saves Doctor Manhattan as well, inspiring him to go back to his own universe and make the changes Superman would have wanted him to make. All building to the finale of a boy named Clark with Manhattan’s insignia on his forehead, carrying on the legacy of both supermen. Even in the world of Watchmen, Superman’s impact can shine light in even the darkest places.
