Downton Abbey The Best Character In Each Season & Movie

There have been few period dramas with quite the reach and popularity of Downton Abbey, which became a global phenomenon throughout its run. A significant part of its appeal stems from the ways in which the series engages with history, showing how one particular aristocratic family – and their servants – contend with the increasing pressures and conflicts brought about by modernity in the 20th century.

Each of its six seasons gave particular members of the cast the chance to demonstrate why their characters were important and why they were such a vital part of the series’ overall thematic vision.

Season One – Lady Mary

There’s no question that Mary is the best character in the first season. For one thing, the entire fate of Downton rests on her shoulders, since as the eldest daughter she is her father’s heir (though things are complicated by the conditions of her grandfather’s meddling, which means that the estate must go to a male heir).

Mary has moments of heartlessness, like when she reacts coldly to the news of her fiancé’s passing at the start of the series, but as the show goes on she demonstrates that she is a complicated character who undergoes some major development. She shows that she has many hidden depths and cares deeply for those around her, particularly her maid Anna.

Season Two – Lady Sybil

From the beginning, the youngest Crawley daughter, Sybil, was one of the best characters with some iconic Downton Abbey scenes. What made Sybil stand out was that she never seemed to take her position as an aristocrat for granted. Time and again, she demonstrated that she was the type of person who travel her own path, no matter what the authority figures in her life (especially her father) thought she should do. Most notably, this season shows just how far she is willing to go when she starts a forbidden romance with Tom Branson, the family’s chauffeur, which quickly blossoms into something rich and deep.

Season Three – Matthew Crawley

It was also clear from the very early episodes that Matthew and Mary were bound to be together since he was the heir to her father’s fortune and also her most beloved romantic interest. Season 3 is where all of that truly comes together, as they finally admit their feelings for one another and start their life together. However, it all ends in tragedy when Matthew is killed in an accident, arguably one of the saddest moments in Downton Abbey history. Nevertheless, even in death, Matthew cemented his place as a powerful force on the show, since his passing would go on to influence much of Mary’s later life.

Season Four – Lady Edith

Edith has always occupied a rather strange place in the Crawley household, given that she is the middle daughter of three. However, the fourth season is really where she comes into her own, as she has to contend with the reality that the man she loves has most likely been killed in Germany and she will have to raise their child on her own.

As with the other members of her family, she learns the hard way that the world can be very unforgiving when it comes to women and their “indiscretions.” Her efforts to stay part of her daughter’s life are truly some of the series’ most heartrending scenes.

Season Five – Robert Crawley

As the patriarch of the Crawley family, Robert has always been one of the series’ most important characters, and he does some good (and bad) things during the course of the show. It’s in season five, however, that he shows that, beneath his sometimes gruff and conservative exterior, he really does have a good heart. Most notably, he ensures that Mrs. Patmore’s nephew has a plaque of his own honoring his war service, even though it appears that he was shot for cowardice.

Throughout the series, and particularly in season 5, Robert proves that whatever else he might be and whatever else he might do, he will always look after the staff that has dedicated their lives to the Crawley family.

Season Six – Thomas Barrow

When the series begins, Thomas is very much a predictable villain. However, as the show goes on, he reveals more and more about himself, allowing viewers to understand that his profound negativity is largely a product of being gay in a world in which such a thing is seen as a disease or worse.

As a result, Thomas has his own share of sad moments in Downton Abbey. By the end of season 6, he has begun to change his ways, becoming a much more important part of the Downton household and at last, finding his own way of achieving happiness and a sense of belonging. Watching Thomas’ development is a highlight of Downton’s sixth season.

Downton Abbey (The Film) – The Dowager Countess

The Dowager Countess Violet is, without a doubt, one of the venerable Dame Maggie Smith’s best (and most badass) roles. She may be conservative in nature and cutting with her remarks at times, but she is still a very lovable character in the show. She also takes a pronounced role in the movie, in which she reveals that she is ill and may not have long left to live.

It’s a devastating moment, but it also gives her the chance to inform Mary that she can leave this life in peace, knowing that her beloved Downton and its future are secure. Her stoicism in the face of her own demise ensures that she will long remain a fan favorite and is the stand-out character in the Downton Abbey film.
