Drag Race Philippines All About The Newest International Spinoff

The empire of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been expanding to many different corners of the world, and here’s everything that the fans need to know about the competition series’ newest international spinoff, Drag Race Philippines. What started as a niche show about underdog drag performers has evolved into a global franchise spanning from Canada to Australia’s RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.

The inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race aired in 2009 with a modest budget and a blurry filter used to camouflage some of the series’ flaws. For several years, Drag Race existed under the radar as queer counterculture art-form of drag remained too taboo for the mainstream of the early 2010s. However, something shifted with RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars 2, which managed to break rating records for Logo. The success of All Stars 2 helped the series to get picked up by VH1. RuPaul’s momentum continued with Drag Race season 9, which featured the House of Gucci star Lady Gaga in the premiere episode and garnered almost 1 million viewers.

The success of these seasons helped RuPaul transform Drag Race into an international franchise. The first spinoff was Drag Race Thailand, which premiered in 2018, and then came RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. Over the years, new variations of Drag Race sprouted in countries such as Canada, Spain, Australia, and the Netherlands. In July, RuPauls announced that Drag Race Italia was in production. Now, the latest country to get conquered by this hit drag series is the Philippines. On August 16, RuPaul announced that production is underway for Drag Race Philippines and called on Filipino drag queens to audition for the emerging franchise.

In the announcement video, the All Stars 6 host said: “Calling all queens! If you think you have what it takes to become the first Drag Race Superstar from the Philippines, we wanna hear from you.” RuPaul kicked off the series’ 10th spinoff by inviting Filipino drag performers to “Show us your charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, and this could be the beginning of the rest of your life.” World of Wonder heads Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey also expressed their enthusiasm for the new series. “The Drag Race franchise has shined a spotlight on so many incredible queens from around the world and we are so excited to introduce audiences to the dazzling queens of the Philippines.” The WOW founders added that the series will be available to stream on WOW Presents Plus, which features a lot of content from LGBTQIA+ artists.

Drag Race Philippines hasn’t finished its casting process, but fans are already anticipating the rumored international Drag Race season. Even though the release date and cast of Filipino queens are yet to be announced, Drag Race audiences have faith in the upcoming show and the talent of the Philippines to deliver another unforgettable spinoff. While an international series might have seemed impossible back in 2009, the RuPaul’s Drag Race universe is on track for global domination.
