Dragon Age How to Romance Alistair Theirin

Dragon Age romances are an essential part of the game for a lot of players, and when BioWare introduced this feature in Origins, they gave female Wardens the opportunity to swoon over their fellow Grey Warden companion, Alistair Theirin. Young, orphaned, inexperienced and sweet, Alistair is a knight in shining armor willing to do just about anything to make his Warden companion smile, including make fun of himself.

Alistair easily falls in love with a female Warden, regardless of her race and class, following her around like a lost puppy in need of love and direction. With plenty of opportunities to flirt and make him blush, romancing Alistair is one of the easiest parts of Origins, but it does take some finesse if the player wants to ensure it is carried out successfully.

Gaining Approval

There is nothing casual about launching a relationship with Alistair. With opportunities to flirt with him early in the game, by the time Loghain betrays King Cailan and the Wardens, Alistair is more or less already head over heels in love with the Warden. He’ll look to her for guidance, direction, reassurance and comfort, as the only family he’s ever really felt comfortable with is lost to him.

After leaving Flemeth’s hut, Alistair takes a moment outside of Lothering to confess who he really is: King Maric’s bastard son, and, after Cailan’s death, the likely heir to the throne. He isn’t excited about this, as he doesn’t want to be king. The player expressing disappointed understanding in the fact that Alistair kept this a secret makes him feel more comfortable.

After setting up camp, speaking to Alistair grants an opportunity to further boost his interest. He likes to joke around and takes very little seriously, but he also doesn’t enjoy being mocked. When he pokes fun at himself, play along, but don’t be cruel about it, otherwise he’ll disapprove.

Another quick and easy way to build up Alistair’s approval is with gifts. There are items stashed away in treasure caches all throughout Thedas. Gifts for Alistair include his mother’s amulet (found in Arl Eamon’s office), Grey Warden-specific items, statuettes and rare runestones. With the Feastday Gifts and Pranks pack, other items can be purchased to help raise his approval even quicker.

Defining Family

Each companion has a specific quest that helps advance their relationship with the player character, and completing those quests favorably is essential for winning them over. Alistair’s personal quest involves seeking out his alleged older sister, Goldanna, in Denerim. Going with him to Goldanna’s house, the player stands by and watches as the woman lashes out at him, accusing him of killing their mother with his birth. The player can intervene and scold her for being cruel, which raises his approval before he agrees they should leave.

Leaving Goldanna’s house is the first real opportunity the player has to harden Alistair’s personality. While that sounds like it would make him cold, it actually has the reverse effect when it really matters. Forcing him to empower himself ensures he gets what he wants from life, including his lover. It helps him see the value in taking what’s rightfully his: the throne.

Though he is certainly embarrassed to admit it, Alistair has never been with a woman before He makes it clear that he believes entering into a sexual relationship is sacred. He wants commitment and a future (no matter how uncertain that may be), and while he can be propositioned relatively early, he will respectfully decline if his approval rating isn’t high enough. Continued propositioning will eventually result in disapproval, so be careful not to push the issue.

A time will come when Alistair initiates his desire to take the relationship to the next level. Not insulting him after the first time they sleep together is essential in maintaining the relationship. He does like to joke around and make fun, but does not take kindly to being made fun of, especially regarding sex.

Alistair also doesn’t take kindly to a Warden who is also romantically entangled with Leliana or Zevran, and will force her to choose monogamy to continue their relationship. He is also deeply disconcerted by a lover who encourages him to sleep with Morrigan and conceive a child so they can survive the final battle against the Archdemon. Though he’s uncomfortable, even a little angry about it, Alistair can be persuaded that this act could secure their future and save their lives.

To Queen or Not to Queen

As the endgame unfolds, Alistair has the option to take the throne or leave it for Cailan’s widow. A human noble female Warden can agree to become his queen if he takes the throne. However, if he remains unhardened, Alistair will sever ties with any other race and class of Warden, fearing that people won’t accept their relationship. A hardened Alistair can be reasoned with, choosing to carry on their relationship regardless of the player character’s origins and damning anyone who would dare tell a king who he can and cannot love.

If Alistair chooses not to take the throne, he remains a Grey Warden, and it’s suggested that he and his lover stay with the Wardens together. He even mentions her in Dragon Age II when he encounters Hawke on the streets of Kirkwall, giving them her amulet as an act of protection. A King Alistair who married the Warden will teasingly refer to her in conversation with Hawke as the old ball and chain, suggesting their relationship is still as strong, if not stronger. He also references her in Inquisition if he is Hawke’s Warden contact, noting that she’s off searching for a cure.
