While the romances in Dragon Age are iconic and filled with representation, these non-romanceable characters are just as important.

The Dragon Age franchise is known for having some rather intriguing romantic storylines, particularly in Inquisition, and giving players the option of romancing some of their potential companions. These love stories also include a lot of LGBTQ+ representation, which is something the games have been praised for over the years. However, there are other companion characters that aren’t romanceable but instead act as familial or platonic partners to the main character’s life.
While it’s true that, overall, the romanceable characters tend to give the most interesting backstories and leave more of an impression on fans, there are a few exceptions to this. A few of the non-romanceable options are just as important to the games.
8 Wynne
Compared to some of the other characters on this list, Wynne isn’t the most exciting. However, she’s still better than other non-romanceable companions from Dragon Age: Origins such as Ogrehn or Sten.
The main issue with Wynne is there was nothing about her that was remarkable. She has a rather run-of-the-mill mage story that doesn’t compare to companions like Anders or Merrill, and she was mainly only useful because of her healing abilities. Still, points for how much she shines in comparison to any other platonic-only character in Origins.
7 Carver Hawke
Carver Hawke is a character that many fans can’t stand, but there is a subset of people who really love him. Overall, he can be difficult to deal with because he is jealous of Hawke and always antagonistic.
And, regardless of what the player does, he will end up as a non-playable character after Act 1. However, while he might come off as shiny and difficult, his story can be appealing if the gamer enjoys family dramas. Plus, the element of mage sibling versus Templar sibling is worth exploring.
6 Nathaniel Howe
Nathaniel Howe is a companion that could be higher on the list, but he just isn’t around as long as many of the other characters. He appears in the Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening expansion, and his story is a rather exciting twist on the events of the main game.
He arrives looking to kill the Grey Wardens to avenge his family, but he turns out to be a rather great rogue to have on your team. Many fans love the character, and he even makes a brief appearance in Dragon Age 2.
5 Mabari Hound
It’s hard not to enjoy pets even if they are fictional and virtual ones in a video game. The mabari hound is a full-on companion in Origins and can also be a character in Dragon Age 2 with The Black Emporium DLC. However, in Dragon Age 2, the dog isn’t customizable but just appears as an aide in battle.
While many players enjoy having a pet and grow attached, the Mabari hound can’t speak and is really just a highly loyal and intelligent dog. So, while lovable, there isn’t much to be said that stands out about his existence. Mostly, he’s just kind of there.
4 Vivienne
Vivienne is a character who had a lot of potential, and in some ways, the story of Dragon Age: Inquisition let her down. With so many other big companion personalities in Inquisition, like Solas, and recurring characters like Cassandra, it was difficult for her to stand out.
While Vivienne was originally useful in the party as a Knight Enchanter, her character development paled in comparison to other characters like Dorian. However, her character design was intriguing and sleek, and it’s just a shame she wasn’t utilized more.
3 Bethany Hawke
While Carver Hawke is a character fans often love to hate or hate to love, Bethany was a lot more likable. If Hawke was a rogue or warrior, Bethany would survive the darkspawn attack, and she was much easier to care about.
Bethany was a compassionate sibling who cared about Hawke, and it was easy for fans to want to define her, as she was a mage. However, she also can’t continue as a companion after Act 1, so her development could only go so far compared to other characters.
2 Aveline Vallen
Dragon Age 2 has some of the best non-romanceable companions overall partially because Dragon Age: Inquisition just gave many more romanceable options. Aveline might not have had the most charismatic personality, but her characterization was consistent. She was someone who cared about following the rules, but she did have a sense of compassion beyond just the black and white.
Regardless of whether she and Hawke were friends or rivals, a friendship grew after fighting together against Darkspawn and moving up in the world of Kirkwall together over the years. This made her feel like a true lifelong friend of the Champion and an important member of the city.
1 Varric Tethras
There’s really no other character who could be at the top of this list, as Varric is probably the most beloved Dragon Age companion out there. While fans will always lament the fact that he was never romanceable despite being a companion in two separate games, there is something to be said about his role as best friend, especially for the Champion of Kirkwall.
The bond between these two characters was easy to forge, and Varric felt the most relatable and real of any of the companions. His snarky personality, love for his crossbow Bianca, and ability to tell an outlandish tale, make him the best of the best.
