Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

A single fight in Dragon Ball has the potential to change everything. Dragon Ball’s action never shies away from changing up the status quo, especially when it comes to Son Goku. Although most of Dragon Ball is composed of fighting, it’s key to recognize that action still tells a story. For Goku, his best fights fundamentally changed how he saw the world, either humbling him or inspiring the martial artist to strive for greater things.

Goku’s life changes constantly throughout Dragon Ball, his greatest fights always leaving a profound impact on the franchise’s main character. Through losses, victories, and close calls, Dragon Ball’s many fights have turned Goku into a genuine martial arts master.

10 Vs Jackie Chun

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

The final match of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai might arguably be the most important fight of Goku’s life. It’s more or less the battle that set the boy’s life into between and after. While training with Muten Roshi gave him the strength & skills he needed to enter the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku’s love of martial arts isn’t truly sparked until he loses.

In tasting defeat at the hands of Jackie Chun, Goku not only learns humility, he takes to heart the notion that there will always be someone better than him. This doesn’t discourage Goku, but instead inspires him to dedicate the rest of his life to meeting & fighting stronger opponents, both for the sheer thrill and to better himself as a martial artist.

9 Vs Tao Pai Pai

Fighting and losing to Jackie Chun teaches Goku humility, but nearly dying against Tao Pai Pai forces Goku to confront his flaws as a martial artist. Up to this point in Dragon Ball, Goku has been depicted as a mostly reactive fighter. He even loses the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai by outright copying Jackie Chun’s final kick– a move Roshi predicted Goku would pull.

After losing to Tao Pai Pai, Goku trains Karin Tower and is able to work on reaction time, stamina, and general perception. Beyond that, Tao Pai Pai’s introduction changes Goku’s priorities. Where the Red Ribbon Army arc began due to a desire to find his grandfather’s Dragon Ball, Goku vows to use all seven to revive Upa’s father, even if it means giving up his grandpa’s keepsake.

8 Vs Majunior

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

Goku trains with the God of Earth leading up to the events of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, preparing to defeat Demon King Piccolo’s reincarnation once and for all. By this point in the series, however, Goku’s love of martial arts is arguably at its highest. More importantly, he’s desperately hungry for a tournament win.

Goku lost the final matches in both the 21st & 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, and he has no intention of losing the 23rd. Fighting smarter than he ever has (and arguably ever will,) Goku defeats Piccolo without breaking tournament guidelines or killing his new rival.

7 Vs Raditz

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

As important as Goku’s fight against Jackie Chun is, his fight against Raditz is another massive game changer. Raditz’s arrival on Earth coincides with Goku learning that he’s actually a Saiyan who was meant to destroy the planet he saved so often. Not only does Raditz shatter Goku’s worldview completely, the fight results in Goku’s death.

Although Goku gets to keep his body in the afterlife in order to train, his relationship with his Saiyan heritage remains complicated for quite some time. Goku’s quick to tell Kaio that he’s actually a Saiyan, but what Saiyan culture represents deeply bothers Goku.

6 Vs Vegeta

As much as Goku doesn’t want to give into his Saiyan heritage (actively avoiding killing during the Saiyan & Namek arcs,) fighting Vegeta awakens something very primal within him. Goku recognizes how dangerous Vegeta is and the damage he’ll do if left unchecked, but he desperately wants to fight Vegeta again. In spite of his brutal loss, Goku isn’t satisfied.

He knows he can be better and he’ll never get a chance to prove himself if Vegeta is dead. Goku asking Krillin to spare Vegeta also has important consequences on Dragon Ball as a whole. Vegeta’s survival ensures that Gohan & Krillin stay safe on Namek, Trunks can travel back in time, and Goku has a reliable ally by the end of the series.

5 Vs Frieza

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

Goku’s fight against Frieza changed not just his life, but Dragon Ball and really anime as a whole. Their final battle on Namek introduced Super Saiyan, popularizing transformations for main heroes, while playing up a genuinely epic atmosphere that brings the Frieza arc to an unforgettable finale. Narratively, Goku turning into a Super Saiyan represents him accepting both aspects of his upbringing.

Perhaps most crucially, Frieza pushes Goku past the point of no return. Goku does not want to kill Frieza, but the tyrant gives him no choice. The manga notably features Goku solemnity looking over where Frieza once laid, clearly shaken by everything that’s happened since he landed on Namek.

4 Vs Pure Buu

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

The last major fight in the original Dragon Ball, Pure Buu ends up leaving quite the impact on Goku. Despite how primal Buu fights– even destroying the Earth on instinct– what Goku sees is a being whose strength is being wasted. Pure Buu is genuinely impressive, but he doesn’t know how to fight. Goku realizes how silly it is, but he still asks Enma Daio to reincarnate Pure Buu as a good guy.

As the Genki Dama vaporizes Majin Buu, the djinn’s soul ascends into the afterlife for purification & reincarnation– all because Goku wanted to fight a stronger opponent. Although it would take years for Goku to meet Buu’s reincarnation, Uub would ultimately become Goku’s disciple.

3 Vs Beerus

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

Battle of Gods was a major turning point for Dragon Ball. What was just a brief return to the franchise turned into a full on revival with consequences that can still be felt deep into Dragon Ball Super. Meeting Beerus not only shows Goku how far he still has to go (while also reinforcing the idea that there will always be someone better, no matter what,) it brings to the table God Ki, Super Saiyan God, Gods of Destruction, Angels, and even a Multiverse. Fighting Beerus has opened door after door for Goku and it doesn’t look like he’ll be slowing down anytime soon.

2 Vs Jiren

Dragon Ball 10 Fights That Changed Goku’s Life

While Jiren leaves little impact on Goku as a person or character, fighting Jiren allows Goku to tap into Ultra Instinct– a divine ability that puts the user on the same level as the gods. Goku uses his battle against Jiren as a means of breaking his limits as much as he can. Not only does Goku trigger Ultra Instinct -Sign-, he’s able to tap into a completed version of the form by the end of the Tournament of Power. Ultra Instinct ultimately wasn’t the key Universe 7 needed to defeat Jiren, but it played a vital role in their victory and Goku has since spent most of the Moro arc mastering Ultra Instinct as his new main form.

1 Vs Uub

Goku’s final fight in the original series, Dragon Ball wouldn’t have been able to reach its logical conclusion without Uub. The 28th Tenkaichi Budokai marks a return to the series’ roots as the curtain closes and Uub himself is representative of everything Dragon Ball stands for: you should always strive to be better, there will alway be someone better, and the next generation will always surpass the last.

Goku flying away with Uub is seen as a callous act by many fans, but Vegeta and Piccolo recognize his actions for what they are: 100% Goku. At the end of his martial arts career, Goku may be ready to pass on his teachings to a student with overwhelming potential, but that doesn’t mean he won’t stop pushing himself beyond his limits.
