Dragon Ball Supers Potara Earrings Retcon Was A Mistake

Dragon Ball Super had to rewrite the rules of the Potara Earrings in order to bring back Vegito, but this retcon was a mistake that could easily have been avoided. In Dragon Ball Z, there are two different ways that Goku and Vegeta are able to fuse. One way is through the Fusion Dance, where they become “Gogeta”. The second is the Potara Earrings. Once each character puts on one of the earrings, their mystical energy pulls them together and transforms them into “Vegito”.

During the Buu Saga, the Z Warriors faced insurmountable odds against Buu. They tried everything they could to defeat him. Vegeta’s sacrifice, the Z-Sword, Gotenks, and Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 form all posed a challenge to Buu but none were able to put him away. The last resort was the Potara Earrings, which are given to Goku by the Old Kai. Supreme Kai and Kibito use them as a demonstration but are accidentally merged together permanently. Goku understood that if he and Vegeta wore the earrings, they would be fused together forever. After becoming “Vegito,” they battled Buu until they allowed themselves to be absorbed. The fusion was seemingly dispelled by the energy inside Buu’s body.

Dragon Ball Super brings back the Potara Earrings during the Future Trunks Saga when Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks have to face off against Goku Black and Zamasu in their fused form. As it turns out, they need to combine their powers to beat them and are given another pair of Potara Earrings, but this time they won’t have to worry about the fusion being permanent. According to Gowasu, the fusion only lasts forever when the earrings are worn by Kais. For Goku and Vegeta, it only lasts an hour. This explains why it permanently fused Supreme Kai with Kibito.

This modification to the rules of the Potara Earrings allows Goku and Vegeta to use the transformation without being trapped in the Vegito form. Dragon Ball Super essentially discards a rule established in Dragon Ball Z just so Vegito can return when needed. What doesn’t make sense is why Old Kai and Supreme Kai weren’t aware of the real rules in the first place.

The Potara fusion lasting forever in the Buu Saga was meant to show how high the stakes were for the fight with Buu. Goku was willing to merge himself with his rival for the rest of his life to defeat Buu, but Dragon Ball Super makes it clear this risk never existed. Perhaps the lesson to be learned here is that a series shouldn’t make rules that will eventually be broken later.
