Dragon Balls Version of Mario Kart Proves Super is The Best Sequel

The manga Dragon Ball Super gave the Z Fighters their own Mario Kart-style racing game in-universe. The competitive Saiyans predictably took it a bit too seriously – as Goku and Vegeta gleefully found a new way to battle for supremacy – but the game actually shows why Dragon Ball is still going strong.

In chapter 17 of the Dragon Ball Super manga, in the midst of the Goku Black arc, the team takes a little break in the present era with the visiting Future Trunks to play a kart racing video game which inexplicably stars themselves and is Dragon Ball-themed. While it’s believable that after Cell and Buu, the Saiyans might have enough fame to have a game made after them, the kart racing game has some odd inclusions that raise a lot of questions – like including both Trunks and Future Trunks, the minor characters of Pilaf and Mai, and the God of Destruction Beerus, who had only recently appeared on Earth for the first time. Each character who plays therefore gets to play as themselves.

Young Trunks turns out to be pretty skilled at video games, which may not be all that surprising considering his age and family wealth. Beerus is a sore loser, destroying his controller after coming in third (behind the two Trunks). Most amusing is Goku versus Vegeta, which turns their usual rivalry on its head by having Vegeta consider nothing more than speed, while Goku employs some racing tactics like slowing down into turns and accelerating out of them.

The tactics pay off, as Goku comes in fourth, while Vegeta’s name appears to be in eighth (last) place. It seems Goku’s time at driving school in Dragon Ball Z did teach him something after all! But while the scene is fun, it also shows why Dragon Ball is such a long-running franchise.

Aside from the obvious comedic value of watching these strange and powerful characters play a silly kart racing game, the scene carries a secondary purpose of exploring the characters in ways that make the reader feel affection for their different personalities. For Future Trunks, it’s the first moment of peace and normalcy that he’s had in some time; his era had barely gotten a moment’s peace from the androids before Goku Black showed up and started ransacking the Earth again, so video games are a luxury this Trunks has rarely enjoyed. It helps to emphasize the difference between the present era’s child Trunks as well, since both have had such wildly different lives.

While it’s often obvious that the young Trunks envies his older self for being cool and getting attention, that envy runs both ways, and it’s these peaceful moments that Future Trunks longs for the most. After all, if the story’s going to go to the trouble of bringing a character like Future Trunks into the cast, it’s important to show why this character is worth exploring.

While Dragon Ball Super is certainly no stranger to goofy gags that exist solely for the sake of comedy, it’s these types of scenes that can demonstrate how well the comedic and more dramatic scenes can blend together and support each other, something that’s played a big role in why Dragon Ball has managed to remain relevant. It’s interesting to note that this scene wasn’t in the anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Super, which was being written at the same time, making this Mario Kart-esque scene a personal touch from Akira Toriyama himself.
