Dreamhaven Studios How the New Game Studio Is Linked to D&D & StarCraft

One of Blizzard Entertainment’s co-founders and former CEO, Mike Morhaime, has announced the opening of his publishing studio, Dreamhaven. It was already exciting to hear someone who helped build a gaming giant is setting back out into the gaming industry, but on top of this, Dreamhaven has already established two internal development teams.

Dreamhaven as a whole is already carrying weight behind them with experienced professionals, and Moonshot and Secret Door have some big names on their teams. So, who are they?

Who’s Behind Dreamhaven

Mike Morhaime is just one of the publisher’s big names. His wife, Amy, is also a co-founder and has previous experience working at Blizzard for just over ten years on the business side of things and even oversaw Blizzard eSports as its Vice President.

All of Dreamhaven’s heads and co-founders are previous Blizzard employees in some capacity, although only one was on the development side of things. Shane Dabiri, the head of operations at Dreamhaven, previously worked as a Lead Producer on World of Warcraft for over seven years and was a Producer on other Blizzard titles like Warcraft II.

It seems that as the tides change over at Blizzard and veterans of the company are leaving, they’re moving on to new challenges and opportunities within the gaming industry. While Dreamhaven is a publisher, open to those looking to get their great new titles out into the world, it’s two in-house studios are where the game development talent resides.

Secret Door & Moonshot, Explained

Secret Door is being headed by Chris Sigaty, Alan Dabiri and Eric Dodds, who worked at Blizzard for years on several projects. Sigaty started off testing Diablo and Starcraft but made his way to Producer roles, working on Warcraft III, Starcraft II, and even World of Warcraft’s launch. Alan is Secret Door’s head engineer with 25 years of previous experience at Blizzard. He’s had a hand in major titles like Warcraft III, Starcraft II and Heroes of the Storm. Finally, Eric was the first designer working on World of Warcraft and later worked as the Game Director for Hearthstone. These three worked at Blizzard during some of its peak times, creating classic games that still hold up today. It’s exciting to think about what they’ll come up with on their own and alongside some of the other big names at Dreamhaven.

The rest of Secret Door’s team of artists and developers haven’t worked quite as long at Blizzard but have impressive backgrounds with companies like EA and Disney. Kate Welch, their UI Designer, even has experience as a Game Designer for Dungeons & Dragons.

Moonshot has its own talent being headed up by Jason Chayes, Dustin Browder and Ben Thompson, all of whom again have years of experience with Blizzard. Chayes was previously an Executive Producer and VP, but also previously worked for EA and Disney in Lead and Senior positions. Browder, Moonshot’s Game Director, was formerly the Game Director for Heroes of the Storm and Starcraft II’s expansion, Legacy of the Void, as well as working on design elements for the original Starcraft II campaign, Wings of Liberty. He spent a few years with EA and Activision, too, before joining Blizzard. Thompson, the studio’s artist, worked mainly on Heroes of the Storm, but before that did artwork for Wizards of the Coast on all their big franchises, such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

Like everyone else here, the rest of the Moonshot Games team has backgrounds in Blizzard’s games, as well as other big companies like Rockstar. The pedigree for both studios, as well as Dreamhaven Games, is impressive on its own merit and should produce some exciting games in the near future.
